What caliber to built?

Stupid question: do you need to remove the barrel if you want to "improve( ackley)" it. I'm thinking about risk of destroying the action when removing the barrel.

The AI versions require setting the barrel back and then chambering to the correct headspace. The AI versions use a headspace gauge about 4 thou tighter than the non improved cartridge.

Removing a barrel from a 98 action should be no problem for a gunsmith.

like someone said here its a good idea to use a lathe to put a groove in the barrel just ahead of the action to relieve the tension on the action same with most Lee Enfield's

A groove to release torque can also be cut with a hacksaw.
A barrel that has had the groove cut can be reused by setting the barrel back, and recutting the chamber. Done carefully, the setback need be no more than one thread.
"Most Lee Enfields"? Some No. 4 barrels can be a bit of a challenge. SMLE barrels are much easier to remove.

a hack saw could be used I guess but if your anything like me its not a good idea lol I can't cut straight to save my life. and I know about no. 4 barrels I had a bubba gun that I took the barrel off of that will be a future .25-.303

Dennis if I remember correctly the P17 has a flat thread and is a real SOB to break loose unlike the M98, I have cut 3 different P17, P14 barrels to remove as they will not break loose without relieving the barrel tension, it has to do with the 90 deg abutment flat thread and the 1/2 million ft/lbs of torque they put the barrels on with. But even just the flat/lead screw type of thread just doesn't want to break. It is a very difficult program to remove and save the barrels off P14 and 17 actions

Yes they are harder to break loose... My thoughts were mixed up in my last post... I had been reading about the previous 280 on a M98 and re barreling and made my comment about removing M98 barrels... a bit of a brain fart... About half of the P14/17 barrels I have removed came off without machining, but it is way easier to machine a relief.
