If you have a .303 for the big stuff...

then, for an avg day of 2-3 shots at varmint sized critters - can't go wrong with the .223, .22-250, or even a .204 - Get an NEF bull barrel single shot, add a nice scope and bipod.. all set to go for pretty reasonable $$. If you ever want to upgrade - send the rifle back to H&R and have them fit another barrel.

-OR-

Perhaps an older Savage 24 O/U combo might make an interesting addition in a .223/22 hornet over a 20/12ga.

I like the .243 for a duel purpose varmint/hunting rifle if its purpose is more varmints with the occasional big game hunting trip but if its more big game hunting with the odd varmints then the .270...

I picked the 22-250.
It is one of the greatest varmint cartridges going.

I own a heavy barreled varmint rig in a great deer/game calibre. 7mm08 REM.

If I had to do it again I would have NOT bought such a big gun for varmints, or such a heavy hunting rifle.

If you want a heavy barreled varmint gun, get one.
If you want a light packing big game rifle, get one of those too. If you try to combine the 2 you will never be happy with either...

Get a 22-250 in the Stevens and if it won't shoot the heavy bullets then get a pre-chambered Shilen barrel from Mysticplayer with a fast twist and start reloading for heavy bullets.

If you're thinking of a Stevens I took mine in 22-250 out today for the first time. My groups were a hair under 2" at 200m. That's with a heavy trigger and a bit of a breeze. At $299 + no complains from me.

I used to do a lot of ground hog shooting in southern Ontario (Orangvelle area). In one field we could pot away at critters about 400 yards away.

I used a variety of rifles. I found that I was most welcome when I shot the 22 Hornet. USed that when i could see houses other than the farmer's.

For shooting performance, I used a 22-250, a 243, a 6.5x55 and a 270. The latter two sound like canon fire and locals nervous if you do much shooting.

The 22-250 had a lot of wind drift. If you built a custom one, a 1:7 barrel would shoot 80 vld bullets to any distance you could see.

For critters and deer, the 243 would be excellent. For critters and biguns, the 270 or 6.4x55 works well.

You would be better off buying a 223 and a big game rifle, like a 308 or 270.
