I've varmint hunted with .223s and 22-250s.

I've bear hunted with a .300 win mag.

I have never deer hunted.

If I want to go deer hunting is a 270 win a good choice? I have dome some research and many seem to like the 270 win. Some say the .243.

(For the record I may use the rifle to hunt other North American game)

Any and all opinions are appreciated.

You can never ever go wrong with the 270. I would even use the 270 for bear hunting.

It doesnt kick hardly at all if you are recoil sensitive, fast and flat.

I sold my 270, regrettably, but I'll be getting another soon for sure. I would stay away from the .243 -- bigger caliber, generally, is always better, especially if its an iffy shot. Shot placement is #1, but a bigger caliber gives you more room for error.

.270 = Good choice

You can't go wrong with the .270. Plenty of factory ammo available.Common bullet weights are 130 & 150 grains. If you reload you can get bullets from 90gr up to 180gr. If you want to spend the extra cash you can go with the .270WSM.
If you want to know more about the WSM, just do a forum search. It has been heavily debated already. Popcorn anyone :eek:

i think i'd like a bit more versatiliy than what's offered in 243- hence the 270, or i'd prefer a 30 cal being a more all-around cartridge, say an 308win or an06, leaning towards the 06- that way all your bases are covered , inculding moose/elk /big bear if you should ever be so inclined- and ammo is available everywhere-

For God's sake I hope no one mentions the 30-06.:bangHead: :bangHead:

By the way, why not buy a 30-06 since the .270 case is based on the 30-06 and the 30-06 can be loaded up with heavier bullets???:popCorn: :popCorn:

The 270 is a very capable cartridge.

Hey how about one of those ultra,ultra,ultra double magnum, super short, super fat cartriges????? You know the kind, the round looks like a can of tomato paste with a bullet attached:rockOn: :rockOn: :rockOn:

I will disagree with the group.
I think the 270 is the most overrated calibre for big game there is. The 270 has almost the same recoil as a 30-06, hit's like a 260 or 7mm-08, it's fairly flat shooting but only with light bullets. It has just enough velocity that you need premium bullets (130's), The bullets have relatively poor BC's and SD's.
To me a 270 is the same a 260 rem that you have to burn 15 gr more powder. (125 gr 6.5 at 2900 vs 130 gr 277 at 3050, by the time you are at 400 yards they are running at just about identical velocity, therefore defeating the purpose of the faster initial velocity)
I've owned and hunted quite a bit with two of them.

I would absolutely buy a 260 or 7mm-08 before I would buy a 270.

I'm not sure what kind of loads your using in your 270 for it to recoil like an 06.My 270 has about 30% less recoil than my 06. And both rifles are the same model.

270 is an amazing rifle, flat and fast. I have used it for deer and bear with great results. Typically you can get 130 and 150 grain shells over the counter I use the 150 in heavier bush and the 130 for open shooting. Don't believe the myth that it will deflect easier than other rifles I have put deer down at 200 yards that you could hardly make out through the scope for thick brush. I have recommended this rifle to many people and never had anyone come back and say it is no good.

I love these cartridge debates :eek: They bring out the best in people. If you are interested in recoil the formula is:

E = 1/2 (Wr / 32) (Wb x MV + 4700 x Wp / 7000 x Wr)squared.

Where E = recoil Energy in ft. lbs., Wr = Weight of rifle in pounds, Wb = Weight of bullet in grains, MV = Muzzle Velocity of bullet in feet-per-second, Wp = Weight of powder in grains.

I would absolutely buy a 260 or 7mm-08 before I would buy a 270.

To each his own, but IMHO ammo for the .270 is less expensive, & far more available than .260 or 7mm-08, which are also fine choices, just less popular.

OK, how about the 280 rem. Just as a compromise between the 30-06 and the inferior 270. Now don't get me wrong, the 270 has it's place, like maybe on the wall of a ### bar. (that ought ta do it)

almost the same the 270 and the 30-06 recoil? CRIPES!

I had a savage in 270 and I couldnt feel any recoil at all. My tikka in 30-06 I can sure feel though!
