Well seeing as you posted this in the black powder section for a muzzel loader I would say 45cal and up for black powder cartridge 38-55 and larger .

I can tell you that a 54 cal round ball will absolutely flatten ol' Wiley - and not wreck the pelt if you want to save them. I would not hesitate to shoot a coyote with any round ball of 40 cal. or larger....
However, my first choice in BP cartridge would have to be my 45-90 Sharps just for the shear hell of it - and a quicker second shot.
