A ) nobody shoots only alphas
B ) if you take all day to try to shoot only alphas, it won't matter if you are major or minor as you use you will be way too slow to place well
C ) realize that whatever caliber you shoot you should be shooting as accurately as possible, you should not be willing to give up more C's and D's because you are shooting major.
Classic Minor is one of the few divisions to give a slight advantage shooting minor as you can look at a stage using a 10 round mag whereas everyone else would be using 8 rounds. I would go 40 S&W if your going to shoot standard. You can reload them to minor if you want and get them to shoot like a 9mm or you can shoot major.
I place a lot of emphasis on the attempt to shoot all alphas. That way, if you miss, chances are you're only drifting into the C/D zones and not really acquiring a true "miss". I agree that slowing down to shoot all alphas is too slow, but slowing down enough to TRY and shoot all alphas is where you should be, and if you encounter a truly high hit factor stage where speed really is important, then it's possible to speed it up a notch and play that game, too.
Then practice more. Saying there's 'no point in shooting anything other than 40' is just silly. Judging by the question, I'd say the OP is a relatively new shooter, so the point is to shoot and have fun. With attitudes like yours, new shooters are convinced that they need to run out and buy an SVI or they won't be competitive. Granted, the won't win every match like you do, but they can still enjoy the sport.

so buy something that is going to handycap you right out of the box? yea that makes total sense to right? the OP asked what calibre to buy, so if he is looking to buy a new gun for standard he should buy one in .40, it doesnt cost any more to buy a gun in .40 than 9mm so what does going 9mm do other than start him in a bad spot and force him to buy a new gun when he looks at his scores and goes "hey this shooting minor thing is killing me in the points"?
you don't need a top of the line gun to compete and do well, I tell that to lots of people on a regular basis and the fact that I place well with my beat to crap STI spartan kind of proves the point. you do however need an appropriate gun, and for standard that is something in .40
+1 on .40 being your best bet in standard. Doesn't have to be a $2000+ or +++ cost gun. but really should be a major power factor, and .40 is best for that with not too much muzzle flip like in a .45.
Doesn't have to be 1911 style either. so shop around and also try guns from others at the club and pick what you want/like. The most common is a 1911 style (or 2011 sti models), but these can be basic models for less $$ and upgraded later.
Also, can get a single stack 1911 in .40 and use it in Classic and Standard division, with different loads if want minor in classic and other for standard, etc...
