if you look at the pressures they are different the safe overall rule is that if it is stamped 5.56 you can shoot either round if it is stamped .223 you should not... revers is true for .308 and 7.62x51 nato... if it says NATO you should use the lower pressure .308 as the heavy and hot .308 will and I do mean WILL blow your NATO rifle apart in time. I dare you to load 180 Winchester max .308 rounds in an M305 ant if you do I will be stand two counties away.

They are both rated at 62 366 psi and 55 000 psi.
5.56 Maximum pressure (EPVAT) 430.00 MPa (62,366 psi) and Maximum pressure (SCATP 5.56) 380.00 MPa (55,114 psi)
.223 Maximum pressure (CIP) 62,366 psi (430.00 MPa) and Maximum pressure (SAAMI) 55,000 psi (380 MPa)

Same for the .308 and 7.62x51
7.61x51 Maximum pressure 60,191 psi (415.00 MPa)
.308 win Maximum pressure (C.I.P.) 60,191 psi (415.00 MPa)

The problem with heavier bullets in m14 is the pressure at the gas port is to high not the chamber pressure.

But that's just my opinion and you should do your own research and come to your own conclusion.

Only 5.56 if you're using ice or wood projectiles. Otherwise 223

Only shoot 5.56 if you wish to fire into space.. otherwise, .223 will do nicely for firing 20,000 to 30,000 feet.
