I have an accurized Remington 30-06 with a bedded, floated barrel that has served me well but I'm thinking about re-barrelling to something that would be good for long range varmints and paper punching---perhaps a 6 BR with a fast twist but that would probably be better on a short action---maybe a 6.6x54 but that is also probably better on a short action---perhaps a 6.5x284 but I already have one. Anyway, what do you shooters suggest?

6mm Remington with an 8 twist barrel would work well on a long action 700. It will perform very well and it's going to burn the barrel out fast enough. If you want more of a barrel burner go to the larger cases...

Since you have a 6.5-284, an easy and excellent choice would be a 6.8-284, you just need a new bushing for your
6.5 dies, then seat in a standard .270win die. And you can drive 165gr .270 vlds with a .650 BC @ 3000fps +-
no fire forming either.

I would stick with something in a 6mm if its only for varmints/paper. The BR, Dasher, XC, Remington, .243 Win, .243 AI or the one I have chosen to build, a 6 SLR. All are super accurate, cheap to shoot and perfect for the purposes you have mentioned. Pick your Calibre, get a top quality barrel and have a good gunsmith build it with a custom or blueprinted action and you will have yourself a shooter to practice and paste coyotes.

I had this same discussion with a friend who is a long time hunter and shooter. He has volunteered to loan me a spare barrel that is chambered for 6 mm Rem and has a fast twist of 1:8 for the heavier bullets. So, I'm going ahead with this approach with the help of a 'smith.
Is there any advantage to using a long action for the 6mm Rem other than I have this action ready to go? I suspect I will have problems getting the bullets seated near the lands.
My guess that the go-to bullets are 107 Sierra and 105 Berger VLd's? What powder should I use?
Thanks for every one's ideas. Lots of food for thought for future projects. I'm surprized no one mentioned 25-06.
