What calibre would you choose for ...

I never knew you could even hunt Narwhal?! Would you not use a harpoon or a bow and arrow?? I remember seeing on mythbusters that most ammunition is basically ineffective after a foot or two of water? If using a firearm though I would want something that shoots at a lower velocity and has higher mass.

My understanding is that only First Nations' people can get a license, and the hunt is heavily regulated/controlled. (Its a species on the "near threatened" list, iirc). Moreover, its a whale. So it has to surface - if only momentarily - to breathe. That's when you shoot. ;)

What calibre would you choose for NARWHAL? I sold my boat last year so I'm SOL to even apply for a tag but it would appear some friends from home have got theirs ... so good luck and happy hunting. I'm curious to see/hear what rifle you would choose to hunt such a large mammal.

p.s. for those folks who don't know what a NARWHAL is ... it's the unicorn of the sea!

As I wrote in my INITIAL POST I sold my boat so I'm sheit out of luck to even apply for a tag as there is a quota and tag system in place. NOt sure on this endangered bit buddy posted but we do regulate how many we kill. It tastes like nothing you've ever eaten before let's put it that way. As for myself, I'm thinking 338 lapua along with my unaq(harpoon). One day I'll have a new boat, a 338 and a tag ... then it's watch the fug out Narwhal as I'm coming! HAHA. Friends went north of us towards Repulse Bay the past week and caught their Narwhal and I'm hoping to get a few pics from them the lucky buggers. Cheers CGNer's,

I have never eaten whale meat......what does the taste compare to?

I've had whale meat once, several years ago, while in Norway; and I loved it. Couldn't tell you what type of whale though... Don't know if they all taste like this either.
It had the texture of beef but had a bit of a seaweed-ish taste to it. It was BBQ'd up without any marinades or anything so that I could taste the actual meat.
