What calibre would you suggest for shooting out to 600-700m?

thers lots of calibres for 700 y. i usemy 308 to 1100 yards. and it is a really efficient cartridge. its like the happy medium of rifle calibres i feel , the best all round,. best group at 600 y was 1.212 " with rest, and full value wind(dont know what strength. it really depends on your optics too, get a target turret/tactical mil dot thing and youll be laughing either from 6mm/243 to 30-06 . eventually im gonna rebarrel my target gun in .260 rem and try 142 smks at a thousand.

There must be a lot of dummies on here I guess..lol..enough B.S already..most of us have caught on..specially me...4200s will not see bullet holes at 300 yards either.

If you ever go the custom route, a 6.5X.284 might be a fun way to go. Decent bullet selection with high BC inherent to the 6.5mm and usually quite accurate with a quality barrel and trued action combo.

I love people that give this sort of advice :D

The 6.5-284 is a horrendous barrel burner. I'd go 6.5X55 or even the ubiquitous 260 Remington long before I went this route. I have a 6.5-284 barrel that was done at 750 rounds. It's for sale if you want it ;)

I think every one here that suggested anything but a 6mmbr needs to go buy one for themselves, specially the guys that suggested a 308. Maybe the only other is the 6.5X47 but bullets are more expensive.

IMO, just starting out, try something tested and true and with lots of components on the market to make things more available for your testing.Lots of this stuff available here on EE forums(.308 stuff , .260 , etc...) A lot of those standard calibers that guys are suggesting are perfectly fine for 700m. I have to agree with staying away from the barrel burners, especially if on a budget.

Big case capacity is usually followed by big recoil which will effect your accuracy if doing any amount of shooting.Speed has nothing to do with accuracy, it is whatever load your rifles winds up liking that will give you your accuracy.

If someone told me to pick just one, most likely .308. Easy to get barrels also. Talk to Obtunded (Ian)about custom barrels, he may even have one ready to go for ya!

Lapua 6mm 105 gr. bullets are $3.00 more expensive than 6.5 139 grainers. Can't go wrong with either and recommend 6mmBR site for 6.5X47 Lapua input.

6BR can (and will) do everything you need right out to 1000yds and beyond.

When the wind blows you REALLY need to know how to steer it.

Out to 600 and 700yds/m it is the ideal cartridge. Easy to load, easy to shoot and easy on the wallet to load for compared to other calibers.

My current Long Range Competition (900m/1000yd) arsenal includes:
2 x 6BR
1 x 6.5-08/260 Rem
1 x 284 Shehane

it is so good that nobody wants to speak of it, it's performance is almost mystical!!!:p

Actually it is what I built for my precision rig. It is a nice caliber for many reasons,(available bullets, brass, low recoil, decently accurate)Kind of a do anything caliber for myself, you can load HP's for varmint, 140's or 150's for big game and some match quality bullets for paper.

I notice no one has mentioned 7-08.
