What can be shot one handed?

I've shot a hot loaded .460 S&W one handed. It was on the ragged edge for tolerable. And no, the gun didn't try to leap out of my hand.

I often shoot full power .44Mag from my longer barrel Super Blackhawk with one hand. It's stout but actually produces no pain or other issues. It sure tells me if I'm getting my flinch back though.... :D

I know he's not shooting one handed but it's pretty cool to watch R. Lee Ermey fire a S&W 500 in super slow motion. Serious recoil. It's almost one handed as in one shot his weak hand flies right off the grip!

Lots of average size guys can shoot a 12 gauge one-handed, usually just to show off though. Iv'e watched another member here (JohnL) shoot his 500 S&W and 454 one handed and hit 50 yard gongs like that. I need two hands on them. (thanks John) He should chime in here if he's reading this. It's not just about being 200 pounds. It's about being made of pounds that count, not "stuff" piled high.
 
Any handgun of any caliber can be shot one-handed, for sure.

Whether a quick and accurate second or third follow-up shot is possible is the question. For most practical purposes as well as most shooters, the most powerful calibers/handguns will most likely be the .357 Magnum in SA/DA revolver or semi-auto, or .45 ACP in 1911/Glock/CZ and the like.

Off topic, but allow me to share one more time: My (favorite) uncle who was a guerilla fighter back in WWII only knew how to shoot with his strong hand. Forty five years after that war, I took him to the range and he was very quiet. He hesitated when asked to shoot my 1911, saying he doesn't know how to shoot with two hands. After assuring him that no one will ridicule him shooting one handed, he proceeded to do his thing and from 10 meters, printed all 8 shots in the A zone of the IPSC target. Guess it is easy to shoot a piece of cardboard that doesn't shoot back. Love my uncle who is pushing 90 and battling throat cancer, but such is life.

Answer: anything that you can hold steady one handed you can shoot one handed! not that its recommended that you shoot a .338 LM rifle one handed, but it can be done
 
and here I was going to try my 500S&W one handed next time I was out... then was going to try it un-compensated two handed and see just how much it helps

If your brother wasn't sighting down the barrel MANY RO's will take issue. As many have stated 2 handed shooting is a fairly recent phenom. Police forces until recently used revolvers (designed single hand firing) as well as Luger's, the 1911 and FN Browning's all designed to be fired with one hand.

hand gun/ side arm, never hands gun/ side arms...:p
 
I have shot my 500 S&W one handed quite a bit, usually just to prove to people that it won't smack them in the head or fly out of their hand.
 
Knox recoil stock on my 12.5" Grizz with 3" magnums is easily shot using one hand. That knox stock is awesome.
 
S&W 460+ 500 quite a bit .Hoot to shoot,45/70 BFR.Loaded to the nutz with 72grn. of 2ff.Shock and Awe,two feet of flames and sparks and with the Holy Black not that bad.
 
Years ago, at the now defunct Guelph Handgun Club, I had the opportunity to shoot a bunch of handguns that belonged to a friend. He had me shooting one-handed all evening with .22, .38, .357 and .44. Most of the larger calibers were with target loads. I foolishly asked if the target load in the .44 was much different than a full load. Buddy loaded up what he described as a hot load. This was the most recoil I have ever experienced in a handgun.
Eye-watering recoil!!!
As has been said before - the caliber is not what concerns you - it is how you load it!
 
The old western guns did not have wrist breaking re-coil ...even the biggest ones... so shooting with one hand was not a problem.
 
I've never heard of not being allowed to fire your hand gun one handed at any range and I live in the nanny state of Ontario. I could believe them telling you that you can't go AKIMBO with a pistol in each hand, but take it from someone with two TT-33's - if you haven't tried akimbo, you should at least once. Accuracy? No, not much. Fun? TONS!

Gangsters shoot sideways because that's how they learned to shoot; from inside a car and out through window half down. They're too stupid to hold the gun up straight when they're out of the car and standing. That's why they're gangsters in the first place. No common sense. Lots of people try it just to see what it's like, but an RO would not be doing their job if they ignored it.
