What can hunt you back?

So here's the thing. I'm a HUGE animal lover and have never hunted before as a result. I have, however, played airsoft/paintball a few times and it gave me a taste of the thrill of the hunt and the satisfaction of a good kill (assuming I didn't get my ass shot), and enjoying the outdoors. It interested me in possibly going out to hunt something, but I don't know what I'd want to hunt.

I think I can justify to myself killing an animal if it had a fair chance to hunt me in return. Fair fight kinda thing. Bears immediately came to mind but I don't really see that as a fair challenge because bears mostly attack humans out of fear or protection, not because they're hunting. Can anyone recommend something I may enjoy hunting and be able to justify to my conscience? Is this pretty much exclusively in the safari realm?

I think you should look into Boar with a spear or knife. It might give you what you are looking for.

Alright let me put things into perspective. I have been shooting since I was five and have competed in IDPA, PPC, F-class, and "tactical" matches. I'm very handy with a gun. I fish, I hike, I know how to find my way in the bush. I am not an urban yuppie who wants to go shoot something in compensation for a lack of machismo, I'm looking to expand my interests within the shooting realm and a hunt is a logical step forward.

I don't eat venison or game birds so I don't need to shoot something for the meat. I don't want to shoot something to hang on my wall either. I'm looking for something a little more challenging than a moose standing still while I put a .308 slug though its chest.

Now if the peanut gallery is finished it would be nice to hear a real answer.

Honestly, if you don't like the thought of killing animals, don't kill them. Maybe politely ask a friend to take you along one day, and just go as a silent observer. you'll know if you can stomach it or not just by being there. if not, go fishing.
 
Unless you're a vegetarian you've already killed hundreds of animals.
Just think of it as processing food, but having the plums to do it yourself instead of buying it from the store where no animals are harmed.
 
Thank you for the help tjhaile. That will get me started, and I very much appreciate the philosophical advice. It's something I've wanted to reflect on.
 
I just had a bottle of really nice Merlot, so right now I think that asking anyone on here for some fresh deer guts and heading into lost creek or lynx creek(400's above waterton) with said guts slung over your shoulder and a bowie knife in your hand as it's getting dark would be a very exciting hunt.
I'm going to bed now before I hurt myself.

Makes about as much sense as wiping your ass, then takin a ####...
