What can i hunt with a .303br

Friend of mine's from a country formerly known as Rhodesia. He used to drop elephants with .303. But he's pretty particular about where he puts them.

Another tale of derring-do can be found here:
www.globusz.com/ebooks/ManEaters/00000010.htm

This is the story of a Col. Patterson (with a Foreword by the famous hunter, F.C. Selous) who went after man-eating lions in Uganda in 1898. His weapons were a .303 and a 12-bore.

No one today would likely recommend the .303 for lions (OK when taken unawares but inadequate to stop a charge, according to my African Shot Placement Guide) but, like DWM Bell and his 7x57 for elephant, possible for a thoroughly skilled hunter with years of experience and nerves of steel. (Possibly a bit of luck as well.)

I met a gentleman from South Africa who had moved here recently and he used to be a game warden. Years ago they had to cull some elephants and all they had was some old 303's. He said that it only took one shot per. Likely in the head, but still, just goes to show that it can drop anything. Also of note he regularly carried a concealed handgun for personal safety and his daughters were well versed in the use of firearms. He kept in SA what firearms he couldn’t import to Canada due to prohibition for carry/use when he goes back to visit.

Some people are a wee bit too touchy. The hun thing was funny, it is every time I see a similar slag, and will continue to be in the future, so harden the fcuk up!

I think the question is what CANT' you hunt with the 303 Brit. ?

Reputation for wounding ?

Its been used alot as they have been cheap and available to anyone who could purchase a firearm, Its often been a hunters first Rifle and is often used by a Guy who fires left than a box of ammunition every two years with rifles that have been riden hard and put away wet. Not necessarily the 303 Brit's Fault.......

I'm told they still use them in them parts against armed poachers to great effect also.
