Hey everyone,

im just wondering what kind of game a 6.5mm Swede is good for. primarily i want to know if it is adequate to drop a moose or elk.

thanks in advance!:D

Adequate yes, ideal no. Personally I see the 6.5x55 more of a deer hunting cartridge and it's how I use mine. Others may disagree. I like a little more insurance when hunting bigger game like moose.

Agreed. It most certainly has and will work on moose, but then so has the 223.

With a 160 grain bullet at 2450-2600 fps you are'nt lacking anything.

Stay away from the USA factory ammo. Norma is similair price and way better.
The hornady 160 grain RN is a fantastic bullet.

I believe I read that it is the most popular round used by European "moose" (elk) hunters. Then perhaps the Europeans have not developed the kind of "big bore" and "magnum" syndroms we have in N.A.

They sure seem to like the 9.3x62.

Yup and their women don't shave their legs either, so we had best not follow their examples too closely!

Pretty much anything you want!

Anything in North America besides migratory birds.
The Swedes still use them on their Moose, which are sized like our Elk.

Practice your shot placement.
It's a nifty cartridge.

In days gone by elephants fell to the mighty 6.5X55. Granted that was with a solid in the brain box. I reaqd that a good number of polar bears where also terminated with extreme prejudice using this fine caliber. I use it on coyotes, deer, moose, black bear, and if it was the only rig I had and the shot was at a 100 or more yards I would not hesitate to poke a grizzly with it either!

The Legs I can accept........it's the Armpits that make me Choke:eek:

After Using my 260 this year for hunting which I'm sure you know basically Dups the 6.5.....I saw what it will do with a good shot and a good Bullet.
I'd use a 6.5 on ANY animal in NA.....:dancingbanana:
Except for maybe Musk Ox or Really Big Hairy Bears :)

The 6.5 x 55 is simply one of the world's greatest rifle cartridges, for both hunting and serious, world-class target shooting.

It will do it all on game the size of moose or elk. Just use a premium 140-grain bullet pushed by a stout charge of H4831 (or similar powder). It's hard to beat 47-48 grains of H4831 or Reloder 22 with a 140-grain bullet in a good bolt rifle. Probably an even better choice would be the new 130-grain Barnes TripleShock pushed by the same powder. I would expect that bullet to go right through an elk or moose.

Though I haven't tried it yet, I would not be surprised if someone announced that the 130-grain Triple Shock pushed by Vihtavuori N560 makes the greatest all-around hunting load in the 6.5 x 55. That powder is really impressing me these days, burning in the ballpark of Reloder 22 but giving much higher velocities at comparable pressures. And the Barnes Triple Shock makes no apologies to anyone, as far as accuracy and killing power go.
