What Can I Shoot with a 6.5mm Swede

effective range

I've been looking for a calibre that would work well on Moose and double as a fun gun at the range.

I had narrowed it down to the following:

270WSM - ballistics look great
7mm rem mag - more versatile with similar ballistics to the 270wsm (range)
and now looking at the 6.5x55...

How do they compare as far as effective range? I keep reading how the 6.5 is used for precision shooting which would suggest both accuracy and range. The bullets look longer than a 270 and my understanding is that contributes to the great ballistics (inertia) vs. larger game.

Looking at a Savage or Rem except neither at this moment make a 6.5x55...

Does the 260 share the same longer bullets as the 6.5x55?

Interesting calibre - looking for some more insights..

260 shares the same bullet diameter as the 6.5x55, but since its a smaller case with usually a slower twist barrel, 140 grain is the max weight usually. I have shot Lapua 155 gr round nose in my custom 260 (1:8 twist) and it was accurate and fast (2550 fps).

6.5x55 is best inside 300 meters, 270 WSM & 7mm Rem Mag would give you another 100m or so of effective range, assuming the shooter can make the shot.
