what can you tell me about this sharps?

Belongs to a friend, who knows little about firearms. It's a family piece. Any info possible from just a picture?

I am afraid that you are showing the wrong side of the gun. We need to also see the hammer/lock side to know if it is cartridge or percussion. The earliest model guns had noticeably slanted sides to the breach, which that one does not. That one looks to be an 1859 model military gun originally made as a percussion rifle. 40,000 or about 1/2 of the surviving ones were converted to cartridge guns after the recent unpleasantness south of the border.
