Not ideal barrel length..

You get

1. Huge blast and noise
2. Functioning problems
3. Looks at the range by experienced gunmen that think you are douche.
4. Risk of blowing your own support hand off.

I don't agree. We've been running PWS Diablo 7" guns for a number of years now... and they run flawlessly.

  • Muzzle Blast is very well controlled by the factory installed CQB Comp that directs both sound and blast forward. It was specifically designed for use by entry teams and CQB operators;
  • We have sold hundreds of 7" AR's (PWS, RRA, etc.) and have very few reported "functioning problems" that are in any way related to the barrel length or system;
  • "Looks at the range"... well that's just ridiculous. Who cares what other people think about your choice of gun? If you buy your guns based on how others will "look" at you then you are a "douche". Get over it.
  • "Risk of blowing your own support hand off"... so this is a problem for you with a 7" but not a 10.5" or a 14.5" or a 16"? Guess you must be really dangerous with a handgun.

As for poor ballistic performance, there is no doubt that the shorter the barrel the lower the muzzle velocity and muzzle energy... but they are still more than enough to give reasonable accuracy and to much greater distances than 100 yards.

As for the idea that 7" AR's can't shoot past 100 yards... we've posted the YouTube Video of the Diablo many times before... shows the 7" AR being shot out to 330 yards on 18x18 steel target.

Check it out: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=h034rteEsLE&feature=related

As a small, compact, lightweight CQB weapon there is a lot to be said for the 7" AR. Besides everything else... they are an absolute hoot to shoot :)

Shot the Barrett 8.5" PDW - that changed my mind about this little beast.

Wait till you see the new PWS MK109 chambered in 300BLACKOUT...

I have a 7" PWS Diablo upper in 7.62x39. It runs flawlessly and more than any .22 cartridge the 7.62x39 seems to retain most ballistic performance in the shorter length barrel. According to PWS Muzzle Energy = 1040 ft/lbs with a 123 gr bullet at 2,000 fps.

Those rifle cartridges all suck out of a pistol barrel. I'm surprised you didn't have a 338 lapua option mr Australopithecus. lol. You didn't like the 9mm?

LUL RICH? my AR is in 7.62 x 39 XD Uber awesome round imho

I would love an AR in 7.62x39, although I'd be set on a longer barrel than 7.5 inches. In 7.5 I'd go with the NATO chambering.

How much did that set up cost?

Isn't it really hard to find .223 Wylde ammo?

The US military is using it right now in Afghanistan. Almost impossible to import and expensive.

I would stay with the 5.56.
It's true mil-spec stuff and will make your AR function smoother with less recoil.
Surely you must be joking with the .223wylde?

Also, a lot of 5.56mm is loaded a fair bit hotter than .223remington, which means more recoil. Whether it's smoother will depend more on your rifle.

So I was wondering, if YOU were building a lightweight, 7.5" sweet little rifle, what chamber would you use?

After all the discussion I would have to say .223 Wylde and then 5.56mm Nato.

1. Huge blast and noise
2. Functioning problems
3. Looks at the range by experienced gunmen that think you are douche.
4. Risk of blowing your own support hand off.

1. PWS CQB (nuff said!)
2. Not a single one (can't say the same for my LMT)
3. F*ck what other people think.
4. Hand stops (not that they're needed, but if this is a huge concern...).
