what choke for grouse with 28 ga?

Just bought CZ bobwhite 28 ga plan on taking it north for the grouse opener. It comes with 5 chokes. I have been shooting clays out on the farm with the mod. and imp cyl clays turn to dust. Should I be using cyl and imp cyl for early season birds? This is one sweet handling gun.
 
That's certainly a reasonable choice, Ruffs are near always very close shots and too tight a choke with make mincemeat no matter the guage. Personally, I have always used as open as possible choking and prefer SKT & SKT.

For myself the modified is the best all around choke in the 28 gauge.It is the choke I use 98 % of the time in my 28 gauges.For a double barrel ,improved cylinder/ modified is a hard to beat combation for most partridge(ruffed grouse) situations.
 
#9 will kill close-in grouse, but will leave a lot of pellets in the meat. If I was to choose one pellet size for wingshooting ruffed grouse it would be 7-1/2. 8's and 6's will work OK too. Pattern your gun.

This is important. Different brands of shells and different loads from the same brand will pattern differently for a variety of reasons. The biggest factor is the shot cup.

Changing nothing but the shot cup, identical shells can be made to pattern like a full choked round or a round shot through cylinder bore. There are rounds available that are used specifically to get modified choke performance from guns with fixed full choke.

Besides, the answer to your question differs with average shot distance and time of the year (which affects amount of cover).

Sharptail and I did a review on the Bobwhite (posted on this site). If you read it, you'll find that we extensively patterned the Bobwhites and the guns we compared them to. The whole experience was very enlightening. It destroyed all my preconceived notions about predictable performance based on choke selection alone. Even our patterning results are useless to you, unless you happened to be using the same shells.
 
I use 28 gauge brileys in SKT/SKT.
That being said, I just put one hundred rounds through a FAIR in 410 with IMP/MOD barrels, and although I would rather have them more open, I can live with them.
I haven't ptterned it yet, just started smashing clays with AAHS 1/2 oz. and #71/2's

My vote would be for the most open choke. Either Cylinder or Skeet and #6 shot. Don't like to pick out those tiny pellets.
 
I used a Remmy 870 28 bore for two seasons. In Ontario I used the IC choke with some Challenger target loads #7.5 shot. Worked great on grouse and woodcock. In Manitoba I found that Full choke and Winchester 1 oz loads of #6 were the ticket on prairie grouse and huns. It was amazing how far that little gun could kill....

Thanks for all the help once I get through this flat of shells I will need to start thinking about a reloader.Are the mec sizemasters any good or should I be looking at others?
 
My favourite 28 gauge load for partridge(ruffed grouse) hunting is Remington Express with number 7 1/2 shot.Chalenger and Federal are also good picks.

In years past when they were still being manufactured 28 gauge CIL Imperal were my shell of choice.

It's a good choice as is the MEC 600 JR which is the same loader without the resizer. IMO resizing shotshells isn't that necessary particularly if they are being used in breaking guns.
