I have two FN 49's one a low serial no. 7mm and the other a .30-06. I'm wondering if the .30-06 has been refinished at some point since the paint (enamel?) is a sort of light grey colour.

I realize that the finishing methods varied from contract to contract, but reading Poyer's book he never mentions a grey colour. Not that I think his book is the end all, be all, he says that the 7mm's were blued when mine is obviously parked and painted.

Can anyone with a .30-06 post a picture so I can compare the colour?

- I have seen many of the Venezuelan contract ones with a Black painted finish.

- I have seen Belgian Navy Mauser Model 1950 bolt action with a light gray painted finish, so I am guessing your FN-49 finish may be similar?

Never seen one, in 30 some years, in decent enough condition to tell. The few I've seen in almost decent condition were blued.

Grey Finish

From what I have seen of Belgian issue military weapons like FAL's and some issued 9mm Hi Powers they have a light grey stoving or low sheen baked enamel finish on them. This would indicate issue to Belgian military forces. Cheers. g2.

This might be of some help.
In this album are 3 pages from Wayne Johnson's(goose52 on most forums) excellent book,
"The FN49 The Last Elegant Old-World Military Rifle"

Very helpful guys. It sounds like the grey paint was fairly common for Belgian rifles.

diopter, the grey colour matches the grey in the pics the .30-06, is it yours? Nice 7mm, wish I knew where to find a mount and scope.

My brother has the 30-06 now.
The scope, mount and rail on the 7mm were bought about 20 years ago.

Echo mounts and O.I.P. scopes do come up on auctions now and then.

Just be care that they are the proper ones for the FN49, eg: the Echo mount in one of the above links uses 3/4" rings not 26mm/1 in.
