what coyote gun to get??

no idea what coyote gun to get. i was looking at the browning 1000 eclipse. 22-250 with the heavy barrel and laminate target stock. it was $1300.00 which i thought was too expensive. nice though. anyone out there have any suggestions. i want to be able to hit one at 300-400 yards. like i said though, that seems a little expensive for a coyote gun.
 
i have a savage in a .17 cal and i have to resight it every time i go shooting gophers. it never shoots consistently. i don't know, maybe it is just me. i want to get rid of my savage though and go to a bolt action ruger with the heavy barrel in a .17.

That would be a scope issue, not a rifle issue....
 
a scope issue huh? so how can i prevent this problem? it is a new scope. cost me $160.00 and it is mounted tight on the rifle. i don't put it in a case when i go shooting, it just sits in the back seat of my truck, and it doesn't get bumped around. now what?
 
Try to get some warranty service on your scope.

You can prevent this by avoiding lower end scopes. $160 is a lot of money, but reliable scopes are more expensive then that.

Remington has a good selection of varmint guns in the $900-$1000 range, depending on features. I've got my eye out for a VSSFII in .223.

Savage sell heavy barreled stainless guns for $650 if you're on a tighter budget.

Don't skimp on the scope, a rifle is only as good as the scope that's on it. A Zeiss Conquest 4.5-14x50 AO can be had for around $700.
 
The 12 BVSS is the way to go, available in .223, 22-250, .243, .308 or .300WSM. Top it with a Bushnell 3200 5-15X40 A/O and a good solid base and rings like TPS add a good bi-pod, Harris or Versa Pod, and you will have a pretty serious coyote gun at a fairly good price.

I also noticed that you mentioned a "ruger heavy barrelled bolt action in .17."
If you expect to keep them down AFTER you hit them(at 300-400) I would suggest something larger than any 17 cal.Perhaps a 243 is in order and as mentioned by others,a decent scope.
 
I had a Remington 700ADL 22-250 $499 from wholesale and it was as good as the scope you could afford to put on it. I could take jackrabbits at 175yrds with no problem and gophers at 125yrds with a bipod. It was deadly accurate and a great price. I moved before i could take a coyote though.
 
.204 Ruger is a great calibre for 'yotes. Very small hole, very flat shooter (4200fps with a 32gr bullet) and if you use the v-max, no exit hole. Great for skinning.

Im looking at a Stevens 200 in .243win. Maybe run those Tubb lapping bullets down the barrel and consider getting it Ackleyed. Good caliber for the 1000yd. hunter/sporter class to.
 
my 2 favorites are
rem 70 vs 22.250 with a busnell 4200elite 6-24x40 mildot with a warne rail and tps rings a harris bipod and a trigger job (good for calm days)
I shoot a 50 grn barnse varmitors over 36.4 grn of varget
my next gun is a sako finnbear heavy barrel 2506 with a 6-24x44 signature select mildot and and a harris bipod and trigger job (good for windyer days)
I shoot 75 grn vmax over 56.7 grn of IMR 4350
and they kill what i shoot at no problem
