What determines what kind of sling you use

So I'm looking for a sling for my incoming 20" AR.

I see single point, dual point and even three point slings.

What is the determining factor between the three?

I envision myself using the sling for carrying, at the ready or on the back, and to aid in steadying the rifle for shooting.

personal preferance is the key, but if you want an innovative and effective sling try the Ching Safari type it has a lot of advantages I would choose over a conventional three point or dual point

I think that the single point sling is best for CQB type stuff.

The 3-point sling is a combination between the 1 point and the 2 point sling, although its more complex. It allows you to carry it like a 2-point sling, sling it on your back & steady your shooting, as well as allows it to hang off the front and be out of the way for pistol drawing & transitions.

Personally, the good old fashioned 2-point sling works best for rifle carrying & steadying your shooting. Unless you are doing some CQB type stuff and need your gun to be able to hang down out of the way when you drop it, then I think a 2-point will serve you well.

2-point is the most comfy to carry a rifle with IMHO.

Mission determines the gear.

As with all kit, there is no such thing as a perfect all rounder.

An 1907 type sling as pictured above is mighty fine to aid in precision shots, not so good for the slung in front on your strong side shoulder ready to gunfight....

Having said that, I personally don't care for single pt nor three point.

You'll want something in the category of "patrol slings". Check Canadian Forces supplementary supplies product service companies for good kit as such. I have a CF issue Patrol Sling for my XR-15CQBR, though, not sure if you can actually purchase that exact sling that I own (without joining up) but I'm sure they'll have good tactical variants. Here's a decent place to start you with:

CP Gear

I don't believe you have to be a serving member, as they can gain more profits by being open to commercial as well. However their aim is obviously to supply CF troops with extra non-issue gear that may be useful in operational theater. To be honest, I'm not really sure what use you would need a tactical sling for other than to help improve your accuracy at the range.

Buy one of each. Try them out. Sell the ones that you don't like. Everybody wins :)

Seriously it all comes down to fit, function and intentions. If you're going for a long walk use the two point. If you're going into combat in small spaces and have to transition to a pistol go with the single.

the 1903 type slings are great ... TURNER AW slings are ones to consider. They are a great company and will ship to Canada. they have leather and other materials that will probably outlast the rifle!

Avoid plastic hardware (Ive seen this recently and may not be a great idea :(
If its for an AR type consider the Specter Gear slings - they have lots of options and are readily available here. (Keep in mind Ive seen lots of people that dont know how to use their 3 points slings)

Vickers type is good too... 2 point is handy.

^^^^ That sling looks great on a guy in a t-shirt in a stationary position. Add movement, gear, heavy clothing, reloads and other IA's and you'll quickly find out that some slings are complete crap. Three point slings in general are overly complex pieces of excess webbing that do nothing but hang up on gear. Single points are great for the user who needs constant control of their rifle. Single points excel at offering flexibility in shooting positions and keep the rifle attached when transitioning. What they don't do well is secure the rifle when performing other tasks or allow the user relief from carrying the full weight of the rifle. Two points offer many of the advantages of a single point including flexibility(when slung around the neck only) as well as offering a secure method of carry and greater support for positional shooting.

As was mentioned above, the mission drives the gear train. Depending on what you want to do with your rifle there is a sling that will best suit your needs.

For me the sling is a necessary evil, I hate them but you cannot shoot without one any more than you can employ a pistol without a holster. I finally settled on a BFG two point sling as it gives me the control I need with quite a bit of adjustment. The big down side is support side shoulder shooting, it takes a second to pull the sling out and I still end up "kind of" choking myself with the sling. Still it provides more advantages than not especially when transitioning to my handgun. For pure shooting ease the single point is King, though I feel it is not appropriate for a full size AR15, in my shooting experience it is best used on 14.5" and shorter guns. The single point for me doesn't give enough control, for anything but shooting the gun, support side shots are easy though, but the lack of muzzle control is a huge negative point. The three point sling is easily the best for carrying your gun...for me it ends there. The three point loves to get caught on my gear, as was said before it is awesome for the guy in a t-shirt but once you add body armour, belt, mag pouches, baton, OC spray, cuff pouches it loses its charm quickly...at the end of the day you are going to have to find out for yourself, I have an entire drawer full of slings I don't use.

ETA:
14.5" 6920 gets a Vickers/BFG 2 point
20" service rifle get s a CF 2 point sling...it is strictly an admin. tool

I have a couple of those...I hate them more than any single gun item I've ever owned.

The only reason I am not still kicking myself for buying them (several years ago before everyone realized how much 3-points suck) is that I was able to re-use most of the webbing and buckles in building other slings.

I bought the 5.11 padded version of the Vicker's sling. Affordable and works very well for a quick adjust 2 point sling. It has greater range of adjustment than an actual Vicker's sling.
