What did I buy?

I bought a Mauser 98 a while ago from a board member and I just finally got around to firing it. It is suppose to be a 308 norma mag. Well I don't think it is. It fire formed the cartridge a heck of a lot longer then it was. A 308 NM the shoulder should start at 2.1" well it pushed it out to 2.21". The barrel has no markings on it but I'm sure its 30 cal.

The .308 Norma Mag shoulder is at 2.085" from the back face of the rim.

The .300 Win Mag is at 2.196 "

Hard to say what you might have. A Cerrosafe chamber cast might help.

"Trying" different rounds is tempting fate ... a good gunsmith can "slug" the chamber and tell you for sure what it's chambered for ...without guessing.

And while you're at it ... get the barrel properly stamped with the caliber
it really is .... not a mystery like the last jackass left it !

You may be able to tell from your fire-formed 308 Norma cases what it is for sure. It should be similar to taking a chamber cast providing there is still a bit of neck left on the case.

"...so fire it and see..." Under no circumstances should you fire it to "see".
"... I'm sure its 30 cal..." How? Slug the bore to start. Then you'll at least know what size the barrel is now. Then you need to either talk to the seller or have a chamber cast done. You should talk to the seller anyway.

Slugging the barrel needs an oiled lead ball very close to the bore diameter, a strong solid cleaning rod and a very firm vise for the gun. Oil the bore and the ball, and force the lead ball down the length of the barrel. If it is .30 cal, I think an SSG buckshot is .33cal - but don't try to squeeze a .44cal ball into a .30cal hole. The resulting shape will let you caliper the lands and groove diameter.

Mauser size

Do you know that its "NOT" an 8x57 ?
The 8x57 , if its a JS model, as in newer size, should measure at .323" , it,ll be .318 if its an older 8x57. Could also be an argentine mauser (7.65) which will measure .311"
