Hey guys,

So I decided to hit the thorncliffe gunshow in Calgary this morning, I only had about 30 minutes to check it out before I had to get to work.
I was about to call it quits when I saw this at a table with a bunch of hunting rifles. I dont know much about mausers but I saw what appeared to be a K98. From my extremly limited mauser knowledge I looked for things I had read on CGN about them, factory code, capture screws, waffenampts intact.

I think what I ended up with is a RC K98? The waffenampts are peened, sight hood and cleaning rod gone.
Could some of you mauser fans give me some details on this thing? If it is a nice RC I got the deal of the show seeing what they are going for in the EE, and if not I got hosed, but I figured I'd chance it before someone else did.

thanks!

Wow amazing find! Cleaning rod and sight hood could be replaced. What was the price on the beautiful rifle? Kinda jealous ;)
Oh and numbers match?

I got it for $220, hence why I figured why not! It seemed to good to be true after monitoring the EE. I'm a Lee Enfield guy if you cant tell haha.

And no it's a mix master.

.
BYF is a Mauser Werke, Oberndorf code. Made in 1943 so it was one that was made with a bit more care, rather than the later 1944 and 1945 rushed production models. You did quite well for the price.

Given what the average price seems to be these days you did great for $220. What's the bore and barrel like? Matching serials? Post more pics please.

Thanks for the info so far.

It has a really nice bore, it was very dirty when I got it but cleaned up great.
It doesn't have a serial that I can see on the barrel, it does also have peened waffenamts though.

Why would this not be an RC? I see it has no shellac or electro penciling, but wasn't I common for the Russians to ditch the sight hood and cleaning rod? And the peened markings.

The wood seems like it needs a good cleaning, any recommendations for what to use?

I think a few of the gents are just puzzled by the fact that it doesn't have that Russian shellac all over the stock, that ugly refinish applied to the metal and is free of any electro penciling. The peened Waffenampts does in fact indicate some kind of post war re-issue but I don't know if the missing sight cover and cleaning rod are definite qualities of a RC because those things tend to go missing over 70 years. Based on the pics, the capture screws seem to be there so that's a strike against a RC....

Other than the peened waffenampts are there any non-German markings applied anywhere? In addition, do any of the serial numbered parts match or are they totally mismatched? Finally, is it still chambered in 8mm Mauser or has it been swapped out for a 7.62 barrel?

Based on what I can see, it's definitely been post war re-issued but I'm not 100% convinced that it's a RC...but it very well could be.

Either way, for $220 you're laughing!

I don't think a majority of the numbers match. It's possible that the stock was replaced because it has a waffenamt on the wood.
I see no other markings of another country, no cut out of the receiver for 30/06 no 7.62 makings. The old guy I bought it from had a "8x57" tag on it, said it was 8mm and that he had shot it. The barrel also has peened waffenamts so I think it is a German barrel?
