John Howard the coward can't stay in office for ever.
Sure, except in Australia, the Liberal Party (of which Jackboot Johnny is leader) IS the "conservative" party. The Labor (and yes that is the correct spelling) party is the leftist party.
Howard is a hoplophobe. Perhaps the next leader of the Liberal Party in Oz will be a little more firearms friendly.
However it seems about the only place on earth that bad firearms laws are repealed is in the US of A (witness the assault weapons law and the sunset clause, which effectively did away with that law). All other countries are MUCH more interested in maintaining the serfdom of the people after their guns are removed.
And a little bit of very recent trivia... (and yes I have posted these interviews in the past but I am still amazed at how openly hoplophobic this clown is)

PM shuns US 'slavish love of guns'
Wednesday Mar 1 10:03 AEDT
Prime Minister John Howard says he tightened gun laws after the Port Arthur massacre because he did not want Australia going down the same path as the United States.
Mr Howard, on the eve of his 10th anniversary in office, said the nation's grief over the 1996 Port Arthur massacre had been a great opportunity to tighten Australia's gun laws.
"I would call that very definitely an extraordinary outpouring of amazement and grief in this country and I knew out of that there was an opportunity to grab the moment and think about a fundamental change to gun laws in this country," he told the Nine Network.
Mr Howard said he did not want Australia to adopt the American stance on guns.
"I did not want Australia to go down the American path," he said.
"There are some things about America I admire and there are some things I don't.
"And one of the things I don't admire about America is their ... slavish love of guns. They're evil."

Yes that IS the official Aussie gov website. Interview with a radio reporter. Here's an excerpt
CLARK:
Yeah. As a caller to my program yesterday said, in some cases he said, well particularly of bikie gangs it’s fairly easy he said to import a package of motorcycle parts which will include broken down parts of a gun and that’s what happened, that is how they get here.
PRIME MINISTER:
That is one of the difficulties and we will find any means we can to further restrict them because
I hate guns.
I don’t think people should have guns unless they’re police or in the military or in the security industry. There is no earthly reason for people to have…ordinary citizens should not have weapons. We do not want the American disease imported into Australia.
CLARK:
It looks as though we’re heading that way. I mean it bothers me….
PRIME MINISTER: It bothers me immensely. That was one of the things that bothered me back in 1996 when we took action in relation to semi-automatic weapons and I will leave no stone unturned to tighten the laws as much as I humanly can and I’m quite happy to talk to any of the state premiers about this. It’s got nothing to do with party politics. It’s something that we’ve all got to get together on because
I think guns have become a blight on American society. We do not have the same gun culture as the Americans and we should strenuously resist any slide into the gun culture of the United States.
