What did you first hunt?

I went cruising logging roads with my father-in-law for "chickens" (grouse). I had an old Cooey single shot .22 and he had a .410. He shot five and the last one we seen, I got with my .22, was hooked after that. You can use .22 or any shotgun you own (I use 12g all the time), go for a walk in the bush and usually get at least one. They taste great too.
 
Grouse, rabbits and ducks. Grew up in southern ontario. Grandparents lived in northern ontario and had a cottage on a real beautiful lake. I started out hunting grouse and snaring snowshoes in winter with my Grandfathers help and when I was finally old enough to get a license I hunted around home for ducks, cottontail rabbits and the occasional pheasant though they were mostly gone by the time I was old enough to hunt but they sure were abundant prior to the late 70's.
 
If we're leaving out the years spent @ the cottage with a pellet gun as a kid...

Groundhogs (17HMR) and grouse with my grandfather's old 12ga. 11-48. First outing with that gun, and first grouse spotted=shot a double. Hasn't happened since. lol
 
First hunted whitetail deer, took me a few years to be successful!

I think the secret to hunting is starting with something that will keep you engaged, whether you're successful or not. Not everyone wants to sit in a tree stand for 8 hours or walk dozens of klicks a day. Find something that suits you and enjoy yourself.
 
Actually hunted?

I killed a lot of robins and thrushes with my BB gun and pellet gun, something I cringe at in retrospect. I understand now why my mother was so upset at me.

Snuck my dad's shotgun out of the house and shot a grouse at 12 or 13 and the first big game was deer, finally getting successful after two years shooting a 4x5 blacktail on Vancouver Island in October of 1970 at 17. I didn't take up black bear hunting until 1976, something I have now retired from.
