What did you MISS your first deer with and what's your excuse?

Mine was an SMLE in the mighty 303Br.
I was going to be toting my lever gun, but a well meaning uncle said "here kid use this" So I did. It shot 12" high, but he never bothered to tell me that. One shot, and it was gone. :cry:
 
Friend of mine missed with her remington model 70 in 30-06 last year, 3 rounds fired, 3 misses. Trip to the range yesterday showed that the rifle's scope was zeroed about a half a mile too high :shock: .
 
I missed lots of deer with my bow. Fortunately I never lost one I hit.(Lucky!)

My very first time out with a rifle, not 3 mins. into the hunt I bumped a big buck. I was startled! The deer disappeared into the dense bottom as it bounded away. When it came out on the opposite slope some 75 yards away I regained my composure, shouldered the rifle and discovered the scope on the borrowed set-up was a complete white out. I tried a shotgun style shot but sent the bullet over the bucks back, making him run even harder.

It was a sporterized 303 enfield, which I promptly returned. You could say from day one that I learned about the need for a decent scope, especially here on the Wet Coast.
 
I missed with my 303. First it was a side shot at about 200 yards. I took a walk to see if I hit it but it ran in front of me at worp speed. Hardly got the gun to my up.
 
30-06 at about 80 yards.

my excuse... running across a clear cut to intercept him on a cutline.
 
Don't know if this count's as a miss, I was 18 at the time. 6.5X55
Sat down for lunch on a ridge, below me a small stream about 75 yrds. A nice buck steps out of the tree's to get a drink. I pick up my rifle aim click :shock: Slowly chamber a round as the buck is still standing there. I also notice a round ejecting. Sqeeze the trigger again "click". Now he's looking at me, 3rd round click :? .
So i go to the gunsmith with the rounds and rifle. he takes apart my bolt, firing pin was broken.
Never did see that Buck again.
 
I missed a doe bowhunting... she came back and missed again... :oops:

Only missed 1 with rifle, I was on a stand about 50' high (no kidding) and it was windy as hell. The lucky buck came out at about 175 yards, i had such an hard time to center because of the wind, took the shot but complete miss... We sa him again the next day. I have to say i'm not taking this kind of shots anymore, I wounded a doe once bowhunting and never found her... I stopped bowhunting since then. This is a feeling I'm hopefully not gonna get anymore...
 
Not really a miss.Saw a nice Buck standing on a ridge abour thirty yds.away.Threw up my old 303 and pulled the trigger and nothing happened.Seems that with the 303 the bolt can come up and then of course the rifle wouldnt fire.By the time that I figured out the problem and pushed the bolt down the buck had left the area.Traded the 303 for a 303 the next day.
 
The 1st one I missed was with my .308/760 and reason was "I couldn't and still can't hit a running deer" :mrgreen:

I missed my first few deer with a 25-35 win model 94 that my dad has used for years. At the time I was only 12 and that ia quite a few years ago, but anyhow I was always put on point on deer drives because of nvere shooting a deer yet. I don't think you should put inexperience on point when deer are screaming by you like that. If so there should always be some experienced hunters by to guide the young guns. It took me 2 seasons before i got my first deer, it was worth the wait though becausse my first buck scored 147 typical. Since then I have graduated to a 270 for many years now,and I know that it's not always my shooting I think I have finally trained my gun to aim on it's own.

The first thing I missed was ducks. I went duck hunting twice with my friend the first time I shot 2 boxes of ammo and hit nothing. The second time I shot about a box and a half and still nothing. It was only on my third trip, I was well into my first box of shells, when three duck came my way. I aimed at the first duck and the third duck came down :oops: . That is when I learned how to lead a bird.
 
Man is this a memory test? :shock: I have missed deer with half a dozen bows, half a dozen shotguns and more rifles than some people own in a lifetime...... :roll:

My first time.............hmmmmmmmmmm..........man that was a while ago. I am guessing it was a lever gun, probably a Savage 99 in .308, maybe a Winchester 94 in .30-30, but heck it could have been just about anything...........

My excuse? Same as Supercub, I am a piss-poor shot at running deer. When I finally got to shoot at a standing deer, I killed it dead as a door-nail, and went on to kill five that year!

(For you Western folks, we are allowed to party hunt here in Ontario, and all five deer were legal....)

Shot a mule doe broadside at 50 yds. 303 brit iron sights it did a double kick and ran into the bush. Thought I missed, it was my first shot at a deer and I expected it to fall down on the spot. A few days later I was telling this sad story to an experienced hunter and he told me the double kick means the shot sent a hydro-shock to the heart and if I'd only walked into the trees I would have found it piled up. Bugged myself about that for a long time, sure the coyotes didn't mind though.
 
I would trade all the deer on the wall for the ones that I have missed... in a cold minute :idea:
I missed my first deer with a shotgun... nine times... my excuse?... I was young and dumb :idea:
