Using iron sights only?
I ask as it seems a fair few folk still hunt using milsurps sportered and in original form. If original then iron sights on a large deer but how far away? 100, 200 or further?

To be honest apart from the odd clearing its usually around 100 yards with a scope in the woods here anyway. I expect I should practice on deer silhouettes to get the kill area right using irons.

20 years ago, I spent my weekends shooting military rifles with open sight and was 100% confident that I could hit a deer's vital zone (or almost anything) at 300m shooting prone.
This year, I've started shooting open sight again and don't feel that confident anymore and would limit myself to 100-150m!

30 years ago I was happy shooting 1 and a half inch groups with my SLR prone iron sights only. I'm sure I can beat the 4 inch circle with irons for the deer test but its confidence and age!

If I sight in my rifle properly (ie shooting alot at different distances), 300 yards.

but if not well I try to keep er around 100.

With my scoped .270 I like to keep shots to 200 yards or less. I'd like to be able to shoot deer further, but I just don't have the time to practice like I want to.

When I use my peep sighted 30-30 I keep shots to 100ish yards or less.

I doesn't matter much anyways, most of where I hunt is thick so most shots are 5-70 yards max unless we happen to catch one in a field. Closest deer I ever shot was at 1 yard, furthest was just past 200.

100 yards with Iron sights on my SMLE is no problem. I would be comfortable taking a shot at 150 if I had a perfect broadside shot, and some kind of rest, or comfortable shooting position. 200 would be my max, but I'd need a good solid rest and the time to take the shot.

I'd rather stalk them in as close as possible even with a scope but I think I'd be comfortable on Fallow at 100 to 150 yards and Roe maybe the same.

No more than 200 yards, but it has to be a broadside shot, something like this:

I could do a headshot at probably 40 yards max, but it couldn't be standing.

With iron sight and my aging eyes 100 metres would be a big max, with a scope and a good 308... 350 metres is very doable... JP.

Mosin 91/30, M44, Yugo 8mm Mauser, and SVT40, I'm comfortable to about 150 yards for hitting chest vitals. I can shoot further than that, but my comfort and security level drops. I want 100% chance of hit and kill shot, not 50 or 75%.

My serious animals are all bush hunting, most opportunity for shooting is much less than 200 yards.

Unsupported with irons on my BLR 150-175, supported, 250.

I always gauge my limit by using 1 gallon milk jugs.Start missing more than a couple shots outa 10, time to get closer.

Kind of a backwards progression for me, went from scoped, to iron, now with a bow, just want that close up experience now.

At any distance that I can be 100% sure it is a deer and one I have a tag for it.
And then can I either get the ATV or the truck up along side it as my days of dragging deer and or carrying them out on my shoulders with the deer wearing my orange jacket are over.
