What distance is a 6-24 x 50mm good for ?

I would use at any range for which 6x isn't too much magnification, the cartridge is suitable, and the rifle is accurate enough.

How long is a China-mans name? ;)

100% dependent on the quality of glass.

What is you intended target?

I have that exact range on my 17HMR for 100-200yard small targets.Works well.

Some use that power range for F/Class out to 1000 yards.

Fixed 4X can take big game animals at very long distances.

Many ,many variables to consider.

Yep for 100 years or so 3-9x40 has been the standard hunting scope, good till about 500 yards so 24x should go 1200-1500 safely

Leupold 6.5-20x is one of the more popular models for highpower slihouette out to 500m but wouldn't cut it for 50yd/m rimfire precision.

I've always been an an iron sight or red dot guy. Looking to get into some long distance. Id be using a 308. Not sure what I want to buy yet. Looking for a square foot plate at 100-500 yards. Any optic suggestions ?

Something like a 2.5-8 or 3.5-10 would be my suggested magnification range, TMR/Mil Dot reticule of some sort.

I will also add that you can shoot out to 500 and beyond and make contact with your 12" target with a relatively low powered scope. During the first service rifle match this year, I used a 1-4x24 Vortex Razor HD riflescope, and did better on the 500 yard deliberates than the second rifle match, when I used my 3.5-10x40 Leupold Mark 4. This had to do with me not reading the wind properly the second match, and dropping a few points as a result. This is my point... magnification, while helpful, takes a back seat to other factors such as ability to read wind.

At the stated distance the magnification you choose will work well with no issues.

What I would be certain of is good to very good glass quality and a fine enough reticle as to not obscure your target.

I would look at Sightron, Zeiss, Leupold ,Vortex.

Likely get in around $700.00 ish range to start with.

It wasn't until a few decades ago that variable magnification scopes became lightweight, low cost and reliable enough to be commonplace on hunting rifles. Before that, low power fixed magnification scopes were the most common (2.5x, 4x and 6x).

Many LR shooters use a Bushnell 6-24x50 Tactical for out to 1000 yards. I have 2 of these scopes myself mounted on a .308 and .243.

depends on quality of glass, iv shot my 5-25 schmidt and bender out to 2300yds with ease, and glassed stuff much much further then that... if you pay 200$ for a 24x scope, dont expect to see much other then a fuzzy image when you zoom up
