I picked up a Kimber 8400 Classic 270 WSM and love it, enough that it will be my goto gun from now on I think.

However I just finished up building a nice Remington 700 SS 7mm mag w/Mcmillian stock and other custom work done to it...here's my problem...Do I keep the 7mm for larger game, I dont think its any better than the 270 WSM, or at least the ballistics don't show it to be, OR do I sell it and buy a 300 WSM in a Kimber Montana as my all weather gun and for use on bigger game?

It's tough, the 7mm shoulders so perfect and all, a very nice gun now...to many decisions and not enough money.

Thanks,

practical side says sell the 7mm and use the $$ for the Kimber Montana 300 to buy Bartell something nice :D

Thanks,

You seem to like the feel of your 7MMRM, why not just keep it as it's an adequate caliber for big game, and loaded for heavier bullets (175gr), it delivers a deadly punch. I have 2 mooses with my 7MM with 160gr Accubond, recoil is also perfect for me.

Or, keep these and buy another one in 300WSM :D (better talk to the wife first ;) ) .

Good luck

Thanks,

The .270 WSM and the 7mm RM are very similar ballistically so I can see you dilema. But at the same time there's not a lot of difference between the .270 WSM and the .300 WSM(sort of the same difference as the .270 Win and the .30-06).

If your looking for a caliber in the Kimber that may show a significant improvement for larger game, have you condidered the .325 WSM?

7MM Mag or 270 WSM

Keep both the 7MM will throw 175's at 2850 fps through a chrony. You may be surprised at the actual velocity of the WSM.

What about rebarrelling the 7mm to a 338 win mag?

My thought as well. The 270/7mm/30 are so close in effect on game that you won't ever see a meaningful difference. Keep the 270 and go 338. If you don't need anything larger than the 270 then buy a really good 223 with the proceeds. Most people don't think they need a medium cased 22...until they try one!

Keep them both. Both are awesome, but the 270 WSM in wooden stock may be more practical for less rigorous hunts.....to keep from damaging that beautiful stock. When you go backcounty, break out the 7mm.

I personally am a big fan of the 7 mm bore, and will always have a rifle so chambered kicking around.

I can't see the point of keeping the .270 WSM if you have a 7mm RM. Load the 7 up to its potential and it will cleanly take all N. American game. If you want a light and heavy gun, then stick with the 7mm and 140gr bullets for deer, and go to a .375 H&H for the big stuff.

Have thought about it, anyone with experience with it? Hows the recoil compare to the 7mm mag?
I loaded a mess of 325WSM's for a feella this fall.
They shot two moose with it, out past 250 yards on one, the other was about 175.
Both went bag flop.
He is very impressed with it.
His rifle before that was a 7mag, but a different rifle than the one he hhas now.

As far as your problem goes, if youu are only going to keep one rifle, you will have tto decide witch you LIKE better, because one is not going to kill any better than the other!

let's face it folks, we can discuss ballistics till the cows come home, but if both shots are thhe same, thhe 270WSM and the 7Mag are going to get the job donme the same way!:D
