So I have basically been given the go ahead to buy my own Christmas present this year. I was thinking an m&p then a local dealer showed me a CZ Sp01 tactical which looks like awesome quality. I had never seen the CZ before so now I'm wondering what else is out there? If you had $900, what pistol would you buy for Christmas?

I just bought a CZ SP-01 and the thing is amazing. Just like all the other Czech firearms, built like a tank, reliable, accurate. Cant go wrong with Sig either but $900 might get you a Sig CPO.

Nice choices...
May I suggest the 85 Combat.
If you don't care for the 1913 rail...I would highly suggest the 85 Combat.
Cost less than the Tactical...similar trigger as Shadow (no firepin block)...and adjustable rear sights.

I have an M&P9 and I have spent time behind a CZ 75 SP-01. Both are great pistols.
-The CZ all steel frame is nice, and they are very accurate.
-The M&P range kit will cost less than the CZ, and you get a whole whack of other items.

Perhaps you should buy both?

What if I said one day I hope to compete with this pistol? Does that change things? I have only owned 1911's so I'm fighting the urge to stick with that platform and go for a STI Spartan in 9mm. Thoughts?

It may change things depending on what division you decide to shoot in when you do decide to compete.

For production class go cz sp01 shadow. Just my opinion. At the end of the day it's your Xmas present and you will need to go with what feels best and your purpose of use.

Take an afternoon off and go and put your mitts on every pistol they'll let you fondle, feel of course is a big thing. For the money you are looking at spending you will surely find something decent, as mentioned the M&P 9mm is great, pro "L" preffered due to trigger etc, the CZs' are great guns for sure, 900 may be abit low to get a SIG however there are always good deals on EE here and the odd sig comes in around that, and check your local shops, ya never know!!!

BTW noticed your in GP, take a trip to Corlane Sports in Dawson Creek, talk to "Scott" there he is a very knowledgeable guy and will not steer you wrong!

I Shot an M&P 45 today and was really not impressed. I am looking for a 9mm not .45 but I just had the overwhelming impression that it was too light and just did not feel right to me. So I am definately looking to something with a steel frame. Now kinda leaning toward the SP01 or Sig 226 if I can find one in that price range.

Side question, would I be foolish to buy cheaper gun and spend remainder on upgrades, mags, holster or reloading supplies? I'm a married college student with two kids, so if I could load my own ammo and shoot more It might be more beneficial to me than a better quality gun that would get half the use.

I'm natuarlly an indecisive person so I am bouncing around in my thought process a little bit.

Thanks For the suggestion OIC812 I just may take that little trip.

It depends what you want to do with the gun, if you are target shooting, spend the $900 on a gun that you like, the gun, included mags, and factory ammo should do you. If you are planning on doing action shooting games maybe look for a slightly less expensive model used so you can get 5 mags, mag pouches, holster, and the start of some reloading gear going with that budget, it's doable.

If you like bling, get something with a rail though. If you aren't planning on doing that, your options are way wider. CZ75Bs go for a good price.

Get a Ruger SR9 for $430, then order a 2,000 round case of 9mm for $500 and there is $930... :)
Then start saving for a press and save those 2,000 pieces of brass and start to reload

Just my $0.02

Good point. I like the idea of the rail but realistically I'm too cheap to actually buy a light for it because I can't justified the use of it.

Points to consider:

Check the availability of Ruger mags and such. I don't believe there are any aftermarket mags for Ruger and the factory ones can be hard to come by.

Sigs are an aluminum frame/steel slide.

The CZ's and 1911's have an external safety and can go into the holster "locked and cocked". Sig's have no external safety and have a double action trigger pull on the first round out of the holster which requires a lot of practice to get used to.

The CZ's, single stack 1911's, and M&P's with the small backstrap seem to be easier for people with small hands. I have big mitts and prefer my Sig. You can also get the narrowed down E2 grips for Sig's though.

Go visit the club you want to shoot at, especially when the IPSC guys are there. Most of them will probably allow you handle their firearm and shoot a few down range. Try as many different kinds as you can. If you're like me, then you will want to buy many handguns. :D
