What do I need for 30-06

I don't ever intend to reload due to the calibers I have committed to, BUT... I am going to visit a Buddy who lives in a solar powered dome in the mountains of B.C. for a month! Guess what we're gonna do. :rolleyes: As he has a Springfield 30-06. I want to get him some reloading supplies as a surprise gift. I won't be buying brass as I am taking a good stash of ammo with me, but what size primer, and what size projectile. How much propellent do I need for 500+ rounds. Is it dangerous to transport by van? I am driving from Ontario-- far....

I'd ask your buddy. He might have a preferred load(s). There is a ton of bullets and powders that work well in -06 so who knows what he prefers. At any rate, you'll need large rifle primers. To figure out how many lbs of powder you need, pick your load and divide the weight in grains into 7000. There are 7000 grs in one pound so if youre using say 55 grs powder, 7000 divided by 55 = 127 rds per pound. 500 divided by 127 = 3.92 so you would need 4 lbs for that load.
 
You are a good friend. Does he already reload? If not, pre-roled is best. A .30-06 works best with a quality 165 grain bullet. (I about to get flamed on "Nutz). Anyway, I would buy Barnes 165 grs, and whatever powder you can buy that works. Regular large rifle primers will suffice.
 
165gr bullet ( I like hornady) h or imr 4350 ( right around 57gr of it) that will do it. I am getting 2830fps form my model 70 with hornady 165gr sst, inter bond, gmx and 57gr of h4350 seated .020 off the lands.
 
If you wanna be stealthy about it, tell him I wanna know what reloading components he uses. Then see if you can't buy some of it to bring for him.

As for transporting, I don't think I've ever heard of any special danger. I mean, maybe if your vehicle crashes and lights on fire the popping of the primers would distract you a little.

However, you should need "Large Rifle" primers. These come in two varieties, standard and magnum, and they are NOT interchangible. Find out what your buddy uses, and it's pretty easy to pick up a brick of 1000. I personally use Winchester primers.

Likewise, powders can sometimes be found in 8 pound containers and other sizes.

Availability is sometimes hit and miss though. Higginson's does bulk orders that do save some money if you're willing to lay down the initial capital. http://www.higginsonpowders.com/ Cheap shipping if you order 21 pounds, it's the kind of thing that could set up a guy for quite a long time.
 
He's not a reloader but, he has a friend who is fully equipped and experienced. So this friend who is trying to get him into it recently invited him over for a tutorial and some free loads. You could say we're both pushing him into it-- actually speeding along the process as he said he really liked it. Described it as a Zen experience-- what ever the ____ that means.
He is however a serious hunter as outside of a yearly $6,000. order of grains and supplies he and his wife live off the land. 100% off the grid in a dome...got to admire that. So for now the reloading supplies I want to get are for plinking only. He knows what he wants for hunting but, I suppose it's a process to go the reloading route which is a natural evolution that my friend will make in time as he learns what works for him.

What confuses me are the projectiles. Does 30-06 mean .308? I think that's what my 7.62 uses, but I buy milsurp and it's dirt cheap so I don't reload.

30-06 uses a .308" bullet as does 308win, 300 win mag and a bunch of other 30 caliber cartridges. The sks(7.62x39) uses a .310" bullet.
