im planing on taking my Ontario hunters license in a couple weeks. im gonna take the course because i know next to nothing about hunting. long story sort i dont really know what to expect, im sure its not hard to pass at all but i want to be able to know a little about zones and such before i walk in on the class. i went on the ontario hunters ed sight and poked around a bit. they dont really tell much about info and what you learn or should know when your done.

thanks in advance.

Hey there , i actually just got in from my Hunters education course , finished it today and while some of the information was beyond DRY i definitely learned alot and had a fun time in the class , it also wasn't too over whelming which is good because i was able to absorb alot more of the information . They teach you about all the zones relative to your area , the firearms used , bows , crossbows , they even talk about stands and bush survival . Dont worry too much they cover alot of it .

I got a neat looking badge and just need to get to MNR so i can go rock some coyotes and groundhogs .

I have a feeling though im going to miss out on deer season as apparently theres some sort of lottery and i cant get a tag now .

Kc You can still get in on the deer hunt. You just have to buy the licence and you will get a tag that is good for a buck. Next spring you can buy your licence and apply at that time for an antlerless tag in whatever management unit that you hunt in.
Nate You may want to pick up a set of the hunting regulations. That may assist you with some of the info prior to taking your course. Good luck and enjoy. Bac4

Do they mark the tests after you write them? If not, how long till you get the results so that you can go purchase the Outdoors Card?

Paul

I got my tests marked right off the bat , it was 70 multiple choice questions based on everything over 2 days , a little more involved than the firearms course questions . you can only get 12 questions wrong or else you fail the test . I found that im glad i paid a little bit more attention than my firearms course because the information is more detail related instead of common sense related.

I got a yellow sheet thats part of a 3 part application right after the test was marked , i can take this yellow paper to MNR monday and they will give me my license on the spot apparently , or atleast a temporary one which will get me started.

Perfect! Just what I wanted to know!

Any clues as to any difficult questions on the test? lol

Questions werent really difficult , the test was broke down in 5 sections . if i remember correctly it was .

Hunters safety
bush safety
hunting ethics
ballistic questions / shot placement stuff
firearms safety / identification .

Some of the stuff is common sense though and usually the instructor will say this is Important and try to wake everyone up . They go over the difference between using Arrows and using firearms , shot placement , they go over survival items and how to make a hunting bag , what items to take , what type of tree stands there are , how they are used , what WMU's are and what you can and cant do in certain WMU's , they cover private property and hunting on private property , they cover when you can carry your weapon out and how many rounds it can have in it , what you can and cant shoot with certain ammunition .

Theres a real benefit to the course and i will say again most of the course is DRY dry stuff but definately pay attention and you cant fail .

Sounds good, thanks for taking the time to write that out.

Hey,
I just did my Ontario hunter's yesterday, and it was among the most poorly designed courses I've ever seen. If you read the manual, and hunting regulations summary, about 1 week before the course, you'll know about 95% of what's in the course in advance. It's bad enough that you could sleep through the course, write the exam, and STILL pass.

I think hunter's education is a good thing, but what you get in Ontario isn't hunter's education; it's some kind of joke.

Of course you can get a deer tag!! Until the end of season, you can apply for a tag. The lottery is only for "antlerless" deer, so you've missed a chance to take a doe or a young buck with anything under a 4" spike. My buddy is coming with us, which was a surprise as he initially believed he was committed to another project, so he's getting his buck tag next week. If you had plans on deer hunting, you're still good to go!

Should have also asked , can anyone tell me what the combined price of a deer tag , 3 year small game license and the outdoors card would cost in one go ? i just may just be looking in the wrong place but MNR's site is peeving me off..

The card with 3 year small game is like $120, not sure what the deer tag's cost.
