what do people use to size the barrel ?

Egg sinkers work alright as they crush down easy due to the hole through the middle. Find a clean, soft one though.

I usually take a drill index set, pick the next size up from what the groove diameter is supposed to be. Drill a few holes in a block of dry hardwood. Then pour pure lead. Split the board to get them out.

Lube them good! Pound through with brass rod and a sledge hammer...tapping gently. I check the muzzle, throat, and then slide one all the way through from the throat FEELING for problems (wherever a dovetail is cut, etc). I size to the throat +.001".

There are enough factory barrels out there that don't meet SAAMI specs.

The weight of a sledge is the right tool for the job, used correctly with tiny, gentle, minuscule, controlled taps holding the head not the handle.

A light hammer is the wrong tool for the job. If you swing and miss it could leave a dent in your gun.

Worst sinkers I ever bought was from a guy that cast bullets. His sinkers were all the crud and scrap, lol.
