“The 1911 remains popular because it’s an efficient tool. In more than 30 years of experience, I’ve met more competent, serious gunmen who carry 1911’s than those who pack any other handgun. They are professionals – policemen, government agents and others who carry handguns daily because they know their lives may depend on it…Me? I’ve carried a 1911 every single day for the past 20 years. It’s a very comforting gun to have at your hip. It offers a good, consistent single-action trigger pull and is wonderfully dependable. Because the 1911 is basically a defensive handgun, I’m not concerned about tight groups. I don’t bother with expanding hollowpoints that could cause feeding problems. For absolute reliability, I shoot only high-quality ball ammunition. That big .45 slug doesn’t have to expand to be effective.” Clint Smith, From Guns and Ammo, September, 2001.

An interesting quote from Clint Smith, which brings up the question:

Of the competent, serious hand gunners that you know and respect, what is their handgun of choice? Why do you think it is?

Here is what I thought, any gun can be a good carry gun, doesn't matter what brand, what design as long as you know your gun. We don't carry here in Canada so doesn't matter but if I would have to carry one, I won't mind to carry a bigger; a heavier as long as I trust it. Anyhow a good 1911 is a very good choice.

1911 (Kimber or Wilson) always will be my choice and I don't know anyone else as a "top gunner" ....
pistol choice for a "marksman" is personal and fully connected with what are you compatible & trained.

umm

outside Canada I carry, mostly because in Venezuela, where I am from, they actually kill people for nothing I thing mostly to prove they have balls, sound stupid but its true, I always carry a colt commander 9mm, and a 5 shot 38+p J frame ,nothing better the a 1911:evil:: just a note, most people there carry glock's and Beretta the main brands, o easier to find also the most cheap, because a g17 cost you there a whooping $ 6000 Beretta same price a normal box of 9mm round nose cost you $100

All the serious shooters I know (real life carry types) are police, they carry what they are issued.

All the REALLY good 'marksmen' I know all shoot revolvers (38's) and 1911s (45's)

For the record I am in no way to be considered an expert..... I am what you may call mildly proficiant (I can hit paper @ 25yrds more often than not). I shoot .22's, 9mm's & 45's mostly.

Cheers!

Hey Joseaventurero when I was in Ecuador the guy who drove me around carried two 1911s and told me all the parking lot attendants and all taxi drivers were armed. All the homes I seen had broken glass all over the roofs and huge Iron gates with razor wire on top of them. Not a society I woul like to live in.

Define "top hand gunners".
I think this one can be summed up by training- the top hand gunners will shoot whatever they feel comfortable with, and have trained on for years.
Pick a gun that feels good in hand, has a recoil you can manage, and then shoot away to the point that you are near a divorce, and see the 10-ring while you sleep. And then you will be a "top gunner"!

The best gun guy I know prefers high end 1911 in .45 ACP. Typically Wilson's and Les Baer.

The top shooters I have seen shoot CZ's, Tanfoglios, STI/SVI, SIg or some variant of Smith and Wesson. These are all IPSC shooters, but some are in Law Enforcement, military or former there of...

Before anyone says anything about IPSC shooters; the current NS Champion PPC shooter is a top IPSC shooter, probably one of his first PPC matches. Most of the shooters in the top ten at this match were regular IPSC shooters. Any top IPSC shooter is usually a very accurate shooter.

you are right,

right know not matter where you go, its trouble dont know much about ecuador, but i know a lot about venezuela and men thats a shame that country was a paradise right know its hell, I go back once a year and in the last 4 years I have been in 3 shooting, the main problem its the goverment they dont care about people

3 shootings? holy crap man. Sorry to hear that. Most of the guys I know who shoot handguns, and shoot them well are using 1911s and glocks. The most accurate gun ive seen was a colt 1911 stainless, gold cup in .45acp.

10's of thousands of LEO and Gov't world wide can't be wrong, they choose GLOCK

Actually they had Glocks chosen for them by some procurement officer. Those large kind of sales are at least half politics and marketing.

Glocks are a decent firearm but not the "Holy Grail".

x2 Gunney
Glk is there in numbers because is cheap for govnt to buy it and at least it's not heavy to carry all day being a LEO

All large contract firearms are "cheap". When you're playing with the publics money, cost isn't a personal concern for those wielding the power to choose what is purchased. If any large gov't purchase was a complete piece of feces, you can be sure no other agency or nation would jump on the bandwagon and buy the same thing. Love them or hate them, Glocks work. They're a tool for a job, nothing more.
