what do you consider to be the best varmint cartridge?

The .204 is the fastest factory round available, this means no more holdover, if you can see it, you can hit it.
I've seen some amazing claims, but this is absolutley the most absurd one yet :slap: Perhaps you should go back to playing air-soft with Sgt. Sugarcookie

.204 Ruger, here is why.

amazing! I gotta get one of these gravity defying super zappers! :yingyang:

What you need to get is an ability understand ballistics. :slap:

I have yet to see a thread on here where it doesn't end up with people going at someones throat.. Seeing how it is my turn I will elaborate on my obviously absurd comment.
In the world of flat shooting rifles (flat being relative in terms), the .204 is the flattest. With a 200 yard 0 the rifle will remain in an effective zone
for predators out to a range exceeding 350 yards without the need for compensating with holdover and hit your target. This isn't a claim it is a ballistic truth. The original post said out to "200 yards" my response is exact. There is absolutely no holdover within that 200 yard range the original poster mentioned.
Further, why the need to go in to name calling, I come here to give advice on what I know about and get advice on what I am still learning. Why the hostility? I am not claiming 1000 yard groups, attacking anyone for their claims or speaking on something I don't have experience with. This adolescent behavior is getting really old around here. I don't own any airsoft equipment, likely never will, matter of fact that is a term I only hear here, usually when someone gets behind their keyboard to make personal attacks, ironic actually.
Seems the attacks around here are coming more and more frequently, some of you guys should really learn to put some of that energy in to something more productive than attacking people you claim to share the same interest as yourselves.
"Playing airsoft with stg. sugarcookie"? I mean, you have to admit that does sound just a tad childish?

Well said, just shrug it off.

Exactly as I intended :) We're not always serious and stuff around here :D Anyway, the .204 is sorta flat as is a 110gr .270WSM loaded to the hooters

a 17HMR requires essentially no holdover for 200 yard shooting either :) +2.5 @ 100, -3" @200

where the 204 falls short is in long range energy for bigger varmints

I'm going to have to vote for the .243 with 55gr BT's @ 4K fps for the smaller stuff (serious splatter), and 85gr gamekings for the larger.

I do like the idea of a .243, cause then I can for other game. now to decide what rifle...

Stevens 200 or Savage or other?... :runaway:

a friend of mine uses a Remington 700 CDL .243 for both fat Ontario groundhogs and deer. its one of the more devastating groundhog cartridges and he also fills his deer tag with it every year. theres off-the-shelf ammo widely available at every Wal-Mart and Crappy Tire for both CXP1 and CXP2 game (unlike my .25-06 which i have to drive two hours to stock up on ammo for, and there are usually only 2 choices when i get there). however the .243 would be a poor choice for small stuff like gophers/ground squirrels because of the ammo cost.

you cant really go wrong with the Stevens/Savage. not only are they cheap and accurate, but highly customizable with aftermarket stocks and stuff you find in the EE. just shoot it for awhile in its factory form before you go out and spend money on aftermarket crap so you at least get a good idea what it is you need to improve, if anything. ive seen people just order aftermarket stuff like the Choate Ultimate Sniper stock right away and then a week later its up for sale when they realise it makes the rifle rediculously heavy to carry.

also youll have options down the road: the .243's common .473" bolt face will help you relatively easily/cheaply rebarrel as a .22-250, .308, 7mm-08, 6mm Rem(i think? someone correct me if im wrong), etc if you wish. not that its a big deal with a Savage anyways - as long as the action length accommodates the cartridge you can order new bolt faces from Savage - but its one less thing you have to pay for/change.

factory heavy take-off barrels and even precision barrels with a low round count can be had relatively cheap, and you can even rebarrel them yourself because of the barrel nut system - you just need headspace gauges, a Savage barrel nut wrench ($30), a vise/wood blocks and some patience.

you can also turn the action into a benchrest rifle in the future -- look in the precision rifle forum at what mysticplayer does with his Stevens actions.

.204 Ruger, here is why.
The .204 is the fastest factory round available, this means no more holdover, if you can see it, you can hit it.
The only round that is close from a ballistic perspective is the .220 Swift, another great rifle. But, the .204 is faster.
No recoil, this means you will watch your bullet impact through your scope, very, very entertaining in the varmint world.
Less powder than the other hot rod rifles, this means less heat and in the event of possibly reloading it is significantly cheaper. Quieter to shoot is always nice too.

Yup, .204 is my favorite.

Yup, 204 for me as well.:agree::bump:

I have a 17hmr and a .204 and the 17hmr is a toy compared with the .204. Dont try to explain trajectory to some of these boys. They claim they have big bores with ladies with big hooters and they dont have any guns that arent the best. If they experience dissonance it is namecalling or a feeble attempt at mockery. As for not seeing a coyote within 200 yards they are in my yard 50 yards away weekly. My grandpa shot them regularily with a .22 Cooey(sp).
