What do you do when you spot roadkill?

Yes you would have to call first and ask permission to shoot it....at least that is what I was taught when taking my hunting course

You'd be charged with hunting out of season, hunting without a licence, weapons dangerous, discharging a firearm(depending on where) and unsafe storage as a minimum. The only time you can legally keep a road killed deer, in Ontario, is if you hit it yourself and you report it to the MNR. Cops, usually, aren't allowed to shoot them either.
 
I've told this story before, but I guess it's been a while.
Encapsulated:
I hit a deer with my trailer, while on the way to hunting camp.
Had two rifles in the back, the deer was still alive. Season was not yet open....
I finished it off with my knife.
Got soaked with blood, and kicked in the process.
Went and woke up the local OPP. He basically told me to bugger off, and call the MNR.
Got a permit to posses from them, a couple of days later (it was Sunday, they are closed).
Took the deer to camp and hung it there, no problems
 
Good question, illegal here to do anything other than keep driving past it. kind of a wierd story,,, I was driving home towards Manning Park in southern BC just east of East gate near mule deer for the people that have been there. I passed a guy walking against traffic and carrying a tire iron, about 150 feet behind him was a station wagon with a little girl that looked to be in distress and fighting with a woman. Being me - I hammered the brakes and threw the truck in reverse, got up beside the lady with the little girl and yelled if there was something wrong, she mentioned they had just hit an animal and it crawled off the road alive but in bad shape. I ended up reversing back to the guy who was carrying the tire iron and mentioned to him that I had a gun in the truck and would deal with the animal. He thanked me and went back to deal with his family. I waited for them to start to drive off and went in after the doe, found it breathing hard but in ugly shape. I ended up shooting it with a slug. Kinda made me feel good knowing that the little girl didn't have to worry about her dad killing a poor little deer with a tire iron, lol. Therapy required.

Did you have to tag the deer?
 
Driving north of Northbay the vehicle infront of me hit moose and broke both back legs. I just missed it as it was 2AM and moose was on centre line. We were going bear hunting back when we had a spring bear season. I shot the moose in the ditch in the dark. Went to next OPP station reported it and went on our way. If we did not shot it what would happen if he dragged himself back onto roadway. Did you ever try and get a hold of a CO when the office is closed or on the weekend. As for deer on Ontario roads, CO's will not come out, they will not come even if you find a sick or injured deer, they told us to shoot one over the phonr and would not come out. If the deer is fresh enough to eat it go for it. If it is rotten and off the pavement leave it or take for coyote bait. I know a lot of people that take road kill and eat it and they have been doing for years.

(It's from the Simpsons, and no offense ;-) ) I saw you asking about road kill and I thought you were collecting (HA!)
 
If i knew it had just been hit I wouldn't hesitate. If I wasn't sure I wouldn't bother. Once I went grouse hunting and couldn't find any. On the way back the way I came seen a dead one a car had recently hit. I ate that one. One hit the side of my house and was laying dead on my walkway. Ate that one too. :)

The wife took out the dog once and was the dog ever mad because a Ruffy was in the dog kennel! She could barely hold the dog back. Then she got my son to go in and he chased it in circles until the dumb chicken figured out where the door was.
 
a grouse flew into the side (passanger door) of my dads truck while he was on the highway doing 80-90 km/hr lol he stopped and picked it up. Grouse are so unbeliably stupid.


most of the time I just go hey look a deer or hey whatever is dead.

on a trip through michegan I seen so many dead deer on the side of the interstate in the ditches and in the middle divder it was rediculous. we stopped counting at 28 :eek:. probably seen a good 50 going down and probably another 30 ish on the way back.

is there just a #### load more deer there ? or do they just not bother to pick them up at all?
 
The only roadkill I ever ate was when the helicopter I was looking after came home for the evening, and when landing hit 2 grouse that got stirred up. I wiped off the rotor blades, and the pilot cooked the two birds up. That was the best beer flavored grouse and potatoes.
 
I hit a rabbit two years ago on the way home from work and clipped the head perfectly - no body damage. Brought it home, cleaned it, and presented it to the wife as a (mock) birthday present. I still get "that look" when I mention roadkill to my wife...heehee...

...and it was very tasty, thank you...
