What do you do with your SKS kit?

What do you do with the kit (oil bottle, sling, pouch, cleaning kit) that comes with your SKS? Does anyone legitimately use any of the stuff as it was intended?

I've got a couple of original kit packages that I don't really have a use for, but I'd feel like an ass if I threw all of that history away.

I always clean mine with the buttstock cleaning kit, the ammo pouches easily hold 40 rounds, a military rifle without a sling looks funny and I put oil in the oil bottles :D Its all good stuff so why not use it? I'd put them on the EE for those who want them.

Honestly, I usuallly use the sling and that's it. The rest I carefully store in a well marked bag with the serial # of the rifle they go with. I'd rather use one main gun cleaning kit and have a bunch of brand new military kit saved up for a rainy day, as opposed to have several used military kits on the go at once.

the only things I keep is the sling and the buttstock cleanig kit...the rest gets tossed out... Its junk anyways...

Its all hanging or sitting on shelves in my garage, airing out (hopefully). The stink is awful. The oil bottles are still in the plastic bags they came in, until I get a bucket of solvent to dunk them in for a couple years to get the cosmo off.

+1. If you ever sell that rifle the next owner is probably going to want the full set of accessories it came with originally.

The SKS ammo pouch is perfect to hold .22 when gopher shooting, it holds several hundred rounds. I pretty much save everything as "original" value to the rifle. Oil bottles are useful, especially the oil/solvent bottles for field use or trips where you don't get home for several days. Rain, mud, swamps and tipped over quads do happen, you can't always plan when your rifle needs cleaning. I also have quite a little collection of oil bottles on a display and always looking for or buying something I don't have.

Each to their own, but there is a value to them as well as practical use, and certainly to the next buyer.

RMXC51, I use a little brakleen to get the cosmoline off/out of the oil bottles. Just dump the cosmo out, fill it 1/4 to 1/2 full with brakleen and shake the hell out of it. Change the brakleen 3 or 4 times and let air dry for a few hours. A couple runs of your favourite gun cleaner take care of the brakleen smell. And thats a good point fiddler, not only can these items serve many purposes, but also having a cleaning kit ready can be a life saver. The simplicity of it all really draws me to milsurps, the rifle is self sufficient with a little oil, solvent and patches.

I don't use the cleaning kits, prefering to use a quality set. In a pinch, they would do. All of the gear is carefully stored away. I actually keep two of four of my ammo pouches loaded with stripper clips in anticipation of 2012 :p

I have Chinese SKS bandoliers I prefer to use at the range, but I wouldn't toss the Russian pouches. I don't use the original cleaning kits either, but they stay in the rifles just in case.

I don't use any of it aside from the cleaning rod. I find it much easier to use for patching and cleaning the gas tube than my other cleaning junk.

I uses the sling as its a realy good, durable and comfortable sling. Oil bottle and ammo pouch are somewhere, not really sure. Cleaning kit stays with rifle since thats where they belong. althoug I did lose the pin. I hve also used the kit when I lost my cleaning rod. Workes pretty well.

Hey, can any one tell me why the russian oil bottle has two necks? At first I thought it was two bottles in one {solvent/oil} but its a common open bottle once you're past the neck? Being military there must be a reason for this?

Щ => Щелочное решение = alkaline solution
Н => Нефть = oil

I use the sling as it's intended, the cleaning kit stays unused (I use a good cleaning kit), and the pouches are used to carry hunting ammo on stripper clips. The oil bottle is cleaned in gasoline (best thing for cosmoline cleaning IMHO - next is brake/contact cleaner) and then left alone.

The pouches are great for holding 10 round .22 magazines for my Mossberg Plinkster.
