With all of our attention focused on scent. I was wondering what you guys eat while in the bush? We use cover scents, scent free laundry soap and scent lock clothing. But some fellas eat salami sandwichs, peperonis etc. My uncle actually ate a can of sardines while hunting. Honest! I usually eat dried fruit and granola trail mix. I was just wondering if you guys have any low odour ideas foods to snack on while hunting? Any ideas? Suggestions?

Dave.

On a day trip I usually pack some granola bars, a sandwich, and some jerky if I have some.

On an overnighter I don't pack anything different than if I were camping (minus the beer ususally.)

Mind you I'm not nuts about scent control. I do use scent free detergent, but that's cause I don't like detergent scent myself. I'll often keep my hunting coat/pants in a container with some leaves/branches/dirt, but that's about it.

I heard smoked stuf is not scaring animals - for whatever reason.
I eat MREs for the sake of simplicity and the fact that I don't have to cook at all. I hunt mostly alone and cooking is not fun alone.

sandwiches. fruit .sometimes canned lunches.granola bars a few bottle of water or cans of club soda or juice boxes a bar or two of sun flower seeds for the long and boring days some pickled eggs and always any left over hunks of steaks or chops from night befores meal. but not all at the same time

Scent control is a marketing gimmick, just like camo.

I eat whatever I want.
Then again, I hunt using the sun and the wind; I look and see; wear quiet clothes; move slow and easy; and watch where I step...

Pickled eggs & whiskey after hours for sure!

Damn! I thought that was my private snack combo! Glad to see there's someone else with discriminating taste such as myself.:D

Anyway, we usually eat the chickens we shoot. It's part of the day out ritual of getting a fire going and cubing up three or four chicken breasts with some garlic salt and doing them in the pan over coals. Throw a big ole crust of homemade bread on top of that and you're pretty well able to take on the world...but we usually settle for a caribou.:)

Quaker Oats for breaky, tin oysters, tea, lots of premade stews(usually moose) and chili. Slow cooked pork loin sandwiches and panfried potatoes with lots of garlic. Inspite of all that we got a mulie and a moose this year so far.:D

SW

Breakfastis oatmeal or a homeomade granola bar or 2.

Lunch is usually crackers with cheese or sardines or tuna or salami, with dried fruit

Dinner is usually some freeze dried Mountain House concoction.

Unless I am near the truck, and then I wi have somethign that is a bit more invlved to prepare.:)

If we set up a camp for hunting moose & elk, breakfast is usually coffee and a couple fried egg/salami/cheese grilled bagel sandwichs. Lunch tends to be smokies or sausage and cheese on buns. Suppers are moose steak, stew, chili type affairs. Add lottsa spices, cheeses, breads, grouse, bacon, spuds & macaroni etc. Oh, and occasionally we might even eat a vegetable like corn or something. Now if it's just day trips, we eat subs, pepperoni sticks and sometimes fry up grouse and eat 'em with cheese and buns

+1. If you are upwind of an animal they will smell you no matter what you are wearing, what you ate, if you farted...

You have to move slow, keep alert, stay concealed and if you are pulling a stock on an animal approach from the downwind side.

Although I agree that scent control and camo are not needed to put meat in the freezer, I dis-agree that it is simply a marketing gimmick. Try to arrow any animal bigger than a bread basket without either or put a trophy down consistently year after year without it, might change your mind.
