What do you guys recommend in a semi 30-06 under 1000 bucks

i would say a springfield 30-06 bolt action, because there reliable and acurate and anybody use to a bolt action can work it just as fast as a bolt, plus less likely to jam,

I have BAR 308 and it works great. They do require regular cleaning for proper function.

A search of the EE for "BAR" turns up lots of them in 3006 under your price limit.

If you want speed go for a remington 760 or 7600 pump, much more reliable and accurate than their semis. I've seen a lot of feeding and accuracy problems with the remington semis, I know of only one 740 without issues, in 30-06 of all things!

I dont like semi's what so ever. But I gotta say my friends 7mm RM BAR Lontrac shoots tiny little 3 shot groups...but then again so does his 270WSM Shorttrac, his 338 WM BAR and his 30-06 BAR...

I recommend a bolt action. Semis are too busy and most come with short barrels. Like my long bore bolt stainless. They are tough and reliable-not descriptions usually used for semis. Some actually seem to think that since the bolt is travelling backwards while the bullet is still in the barrel it degrades accuracy. Still if its a short shot then it prolly dont matter. Some semis dont like cold and the action gets stiff or seizes up. Nah.

As for price well you get what you pay for...save up a bit more money and go with the Benelli.

Do not do what Calum said. Benelli R1 is light and has great fit but sucks in the accuracy department (4" and larger groups are more common than groups under 2") and require excessive cleaning to avoid piston corrosion.

I agree with the folks who advise to stay away from a semi altogether. Get a good bolt action with a large bolt handle that clears the scope then learn to cycle it quickly without taking it off your shoulder. Make sure the bolt handle is round so that you can roll it in your palm. With some practice you will shoot almost as rapidly as a semi in a recoiling caliber like 30-06. Essentially you reload while returning the rifle back on target. Also no problem with lube freezing in cold weather (in really cold weather semis basically need to run dry to avoid sticking). Oh, and semis usually have much worse triggers for safety reasons and are much more difficult to tune than bolt action triggers.

Is this coming from expierience or hearsay. Seems some opinions here come from little facts backing them. Sounds like that to me here. The original poster ask about a semi, not on the opinion on what type of rifle to buy. Alot of what I read on your post is false, as any bolt action hater could come on here and make false claims of reasons not to buy a bolt gun. Funny how my semis seem to work in cold weather never jam and are good shooters. And thats from someone that owns and uses them.

Can you be more specific as to what I said that is "false"? Also, since you use semis a lot, how about I sell you a Benelli R1 for 75% of what I paid for it this year? It is in "as new" condition and has 4.5 years of warranty left on it and Benelli is known for great customer service.

Sorry to hear that. Everyone's experience will vary. Myself I have a Voere 2185 in 30-06.
I feeds/fires/ejects no problem. My other concerns, it has a match grade, read: very tight chamber, doesn't shoot heavy bullets very well, and the barrel heats up fast after three shots.
The good points: it has an awesome trigger, once you get used to it. Well designed machined internal parts, and is the fastest firing semi-auto I've ever owned. (moot point for a hunting rifle)
She's a pricey gun though. I bought mine for considerably less than the MSRP: $4,200 Euro(!?!?!?)
Got it second hand from Goble's for $750.

Edit: As a hunter, my biggest beef with most semi-auto rifles, is that at o'dark thirty in the morning, & cocking the rifle to put a round in the chamber at legal shooting time.
Sounds like a 50 calibre M2 Browning HMG being cocked, and every living thing for miles around knows your precise location!

BAR or Winchester SXR would be my first choice in your price range.

If you know someone who has a Remington semi-auto that is a proven reliable rifle, then that would be a decent second choice. They are hit-and-miss however, so I would suggest getting one from someone you know and trust.

Don't pay attention to the guys telling you to avoid semi's altogether. Lots of us prefer a semi, and most of the BS complaints about semi's are just that, BS.

Brutus' concern about loading noise on a semi is fairly valid however. If your game is so crazy spooky that chambering a round will ruin your hunt, maybe find a workaround or change to a bolt. I've never found this to be a factor at all myself, however.
