What do you guys think? a question of ethics.

I guess there's different hunting ethics in Ontario. In Nova Scotia Hunting another man's bait is akin to making a play for your best friends wife.We believe your a douchbag if you do.

I guess I should have chosen my words more carefully, in spite of the fact I have repeatedly posted in this thread that I DO NOT HUNT WITH BAIT, I only use calls.

I should have said "Would it be considered "rude" to hunt near this guys bait pile? I'd hate to crap in another hunters corn flakes"

If you compare it to another guys wife then the correct analogy in this case is the guy drops off the wife drunk at your house with no pants on and assumes all is well.

Its a public area, I wouldnt use his bait, but does this mean nobody else can use the public area because this guy now has bait in the area?

I would hunt the area, but not directly near the bait.

The only person causing a problem here is somebody leaving a baitpile in public.

So what do you guys do?.... find a piece of crown land near you and throw a baitpile on it so it is now yours and nobody else can hunt there?.... Should other people wanting to hunt on private land have to avoid a bunch of baitpiles just to hunt? I think teh douchebag is the guy that drops off a baitpile and thinks he just claimed a chunk of hunting land....

Definitely not OK to use his bait pile. If you were to use bait, would you be OK with someone else enjoying the fruits of your labour? Would it be OK to use someone else's tree stand because it was in a good location that you previously hunted?

Public land is first come, first serve. You weren't first, tough luck. What's he baiting anyhow, raccoons? AFAIK, you guys don't have a spring bear season so isn't the baiting illegal?

IMO, the guy with the bait doesn't own the land, doesn't own the animals your hunting, but does own the bait pile. If he doesn't want you hunting on public land with HIS bait, he should move it else where.

I wouldn't use bait on public land and if I did it would be with the understanding that someone else may be using it when I am not there....

Public land is not first come first serve.... it is to be shared equally.... OP himself said he used that land all of the time to hunt... he doesn't use baitpiles he uses calls.... now he wanders out to his favorite spot and he sees a baitpile and he can't hunt there anymore?... Since when did a pile of rotting meat become a set of surveyor's stakes?.....

Its not his land and he has no exclusive rights to it....we would all be in trouble if anyone could call dibs on all the good pieces of prime land....so if I go out an put up a sign saying this is my area do you think I have the right to do that? No different then what this person is doing....hell you may run into the person and talk to him and work out times etc....may turn into a friendship!

And that's why I don't hunt public land.

Op says there is 100 acres there yet he can't get 200 yards from the other hunters setup. Is hunting land that scarce in Ontario?

Actually... crown land is pretty scarce here... in the southern part of the province anyways....

I don't know if you hunt coyote but on your average 100 acre piece of crown land there may be like 2 places to set up where you can have a good view and see them coming for a ways out.... 100 acres really is not all that much land....

Keep in mind that 500 meters x 500 meters = 123 acres.... that's really not that much... OP a;lready stated there were two bait piles there... one when he went in and another in his fave spot....

Brad's nailed it.

If the person who put the bait on public land thinks that it gives him exclusive use of the bait pile, he's retarded, plain and simple. It's public land - it is there for the use and enjoyment of everyone. First come, first served.

This would be a COMPLETELY different ball game if the land in question were privately owned.

He he... justy pickin bud... OP posted it as "Kalmatra".... and I am with you on the whole olive confusion thing.... lol....

lol. I figured by including that, the person who placed the bait would recognize what area I was talking about. I was hoping for a pm. There is about 60lbs of fresh butcher trimmings and a dozen or so olives.

this area has only 2 fields worthy of hunting. there is bait in both locations. it isn't possible to not hunt near the bait. period.
