What do you guys think about the Ruger American Ranch Rifle in .223?

Its a perfectly boring rifle.

It shoots 1.5moa groups with affordable bulk ammo.
The trigger is good.
The picatinny rail allows for a variety of optics
The muzzle flash can be substantial
The synthetic stock is strong and you'll be fine with it getting scratched
It functions with AR mags, which is nice if you have some. But unless you're planning on shooting competition with this then it doesn't make much difference because you'll be at a range or hunting so it's not the end of the world to reload the mag after 10 rounds to let the barrel cool a little.

End of the day if you're looking to fill the gap created by the OIC then buy a WK180C, WS-MCR or Modern Sporter. We need to be putting more semi autos out there right now.

I like mine. Bulk ammo in mine is 2.5 MOA. I tried some of my handloads 85 grain amax varget and lapua case it was sub minute of angle. Had to shoot them without the mag due to the length. The rifle is handy with the 16 inch barrel accurate reliable and of course it takes ar mags. I bought it to replace my recently prohibited ruger ranch rifle.

its a excellent cheap solid rifle.
ive had mine for about 2 years and i love it.
i have the Ruger American Predator before in 223 but when they released the new version Ranch that accepts 5.56/223 i had to jump on it.
the Predator was a freak'n laser! i could put 5 rounds through the same hole time after time with it.
my Ranch is not as accurate, maybe 1.5" MOA but still very good.

only thing i did not like was the mag release being half covered by the stock, 2 seconds with the dremal and a couple seconds with some 160 grit and that issue was solved.

edit: sorry for bringing in non-223 Ranches
the thread looked like this on my computer

I notice the mag that comes with these is pinned to 5 rounds. I know they're identical to AR magazines but is this legally necessary for the bolt rifle I wonder?

No if the mags were proprietary then they could be any capacity. However they take AR-15 magazines and there are semi automatic rifles that take AR-15 magazines so the capacity is limited to 5 rounds.

Yes but would a 10 or 20 round mag still be <gasp> illegal if found on the Ruger Ranch?

I found the bolt to be rough machined - it sounded like a zipper every time I cycled the action. Also, I had issues with double feeding the last two rounds using XCR-L mags. But over time both those issues went away after I broke it in, about 70-ish rounds.

As for accuracy - I was getting around 1.1 MOA with Hornady 75gr steel case match ammo, and Nosler 55gr Varmageddon. Federal XM855 Green Tips was getting me closer to 2 MOA.

Here's the results I got with a variety of ammo

Once I got it broken in, I am now very VERY happy with it.

Just picked one up, i have lots or 556 ammo and ar mags. Just a matter of time they ban the rest of the 556 semis, and i need something i can hunt with.

I just got mine and haven’t shot it yet. My initial thoughts are that it’s well made, nice trigger, the bolt is a little rough but will break in nicely. I like the size, it’s a light and comfortable in the hands. So far I’m impressed and looking forward to seeing what it can do.
