Shot this little fella yesterday. He was quite small compared the all the rest I`ve seen. His hair was very patchy and about 1/4" long in places and matted up. His tail looked fine and that is usually where I`ve seen mange start. This little guy had no rear leg from the first knuckle down.

Don`t mind the stupid dates, these were yesterday. I`ve been swapping the batteries back and forth from the camera to my e-caller and haven`t reset the date everytime.

i would not think it is mange.looks more like the after effects of a run in with a motor vehicle.or another animal.might even have been in a trap, tore itself up trying to get out, reason for missing leg.

Doesn't look like any I have ever seen with mange. Last one I saw that had mange was in really sorry shape. He stood watching us at work for hours on afternoon. I thought he would be dead by days end and maybe he did die that day but if he did he walked off and hid somewhere. Sorriest looking animal I ever have seen. I actually felt sorry for him but was in city limits so even if I had a firearm to put him out of his misery I could not have. He had no fur from the front legs back. Just skin, the fur around his chest and neck looked like a Lions mane. I was to within 10 yards of him several times and he did not move, he could barely lift his head and when he did his eyes were so cloudy I don't know that he could even see me.........I think your had an accident of some kind and was just having a real hard time making a living. With that back leg like it is and cold winter having set in, hunting would not be easy at all, he was probably starving. I am sure you did him a favour!

it was in rough shape but it still might have pulled thru and made the winter.the one i shot last winter had about half its front left leg missing.completely healed over with fur on it.it was running as if there was nothing wrong when i shot it.they are really tough animals with a will to live like nothing i have ever hunted before.

I've shot a few that were recovering from mange which looked similar. Most of the time the guard hairs were still missing, but the underfur had grown back, especially in the shoulder area like the picture and the belly area between and slightly forward of the rear legs They had normal, full tails.

Looks like maybe he was stuck in a trap and with all the rustling around to get away messed up his pelt. The pictures aren't very clear on my screen so its only a guess.Cheers

We shoot quite a few with mange every year going back to the 1980's. Some have hair missing along the feet or under belly or just tail or just a small patch.
