Homemade shooting stix. Seen a youtube of them and thought: I`ve wasted money on alot of things, what the heck. A couple electric fence stix and 5 casteration rings and whoola! I still need to cut them down to size. Sure beats what they want for a set at the hunting store!

Yeah, I still need to cut them down to size and maybe remove the step at the bottom. Jeez, they really work nice, the crosshairs don`t move at all and I shake pretty good lol.

I broke my $90 shooting stix this year, seems like every year I break a pair. I'm not buying another set.

I'm going to give this a try. Thanks for posting.
I bought everything at a place called "Cowtown" which sells livestock stuff. The sticks were $7.98 a pair and the rings came in a pack of 100(all they sold) for $2.95.

I used 5 rings. I slid the first one just on one stick and rolled it down half way. Then I slide the next four on both sticks and kept them right at the top. Then I slid the bottom one back up and stretched it over the four and between both sticks and slide the whole works down the sticks about 2 inches.

Nice work. There's a few vids on youtube with very clever ideas for shooting sticks on the cheap. I actually made a shooting stick out of an old floor lamp that uses 4 screw together sections. Threw some digi cam duct tape on it. Looks sweet, now I just have to use it!

They look tall don`t they? Well, I`m 5`9" and they come up to my hip. I thought I still need to shorten them, but I sat on the floor and spread them to try with my gun and I think I`ll leave them alone! At $7.98 a pair, a guy could buy one more set and make two other sets: maybe 12-13" tall and a set at 6.5-9" tall.
I should mention, these are metal with a plastic coating. They are very light, but my objective at the start was to find the "fiberglass" electric fence poles which would be lighter yet!

i have a old set of tent poles i was going to use have them fold up for on the pack. jsut didnt know how to attach togher. i am going to try the bands

I built the same ones. They work great until it gets very cold, the rings lose elasticity and fall right off. one other thing I is that they can be noisey when walking with them. I am going to remedy that with some rubber air line hose slid over the ends. This should also make it a bit easier on your rifle stocks.

Had to google to confirm castration rings did as indicated. Just imagine walking into HOME DEPOT asking where to find these from some young female floor staff.

I made a bunch of them a few years back similar to the ones the OP posted. I just used shocked corded fiberglass tent poles and used the rubber from a bicycle tube as the elastics.

Shrink wrap would quiet them down as well...

I made a set last year and used them for deer hunting. I like them a lot. One hint is when you go to store the left over rubber rings wrap them well with plastic wrap and they will last forever. If you don't wrap them well they do dry out over time.

I keep my shooting sticks attached to my rifle. Don't have to worry about losing them and keeps one hand free.:D

bipods are nice, and there is definitly a place for both set ups when hunting but how do you like your bipods when going through the bush?

I've been using he bi-pod for at about 15 years and have no issue with it what so ever. I guess it is just getting use to it, just like getting use to holding shooting sticks. Sometimes is gets in the way, but that's hunting..........can't have the best of both worlds. It is used as a shooting aid for those long shots if needed.
