I got a chance to buy this gun, what do you guys think? Its a model 27-2. It was orginally 8 and 3/8s barrel but the owner had it cut down to 5 inchs by a profession gunsmith. It comes with orginal box and papers. It has a match trigger and its has been worked on so its quite fine. Has only ever has a small about of .38 special shot through it. Looks dam ###y to me. Ive asked a few guys what they thought, now im asking all members. Asking 850 for it.

if there is no trace of the modification i would say its a decent price. nothing to write home about. I would personally rather own a NIB 686 for $1000 than that gun for $850. but thats my opinion.
 
As nice as the L frame 686 is, you will find those big N frames a nicer gun to shot overall. I have always thought 5" was the perfect barrel length for a revolver of this size and whoever did that work was a craftsman of the highest order!!

Cutting the barrel hurts the value for collectors. The box and papers are nice and may be of value to a collector if sold separately. In my opinion, the pistol should be worth from $600 to $700 to someone wanting a shooter. Uncut, in nice condition, it could be worth another $100 to $200.
 
Let's see: nickel P&R N-frame, in mint condition.....nice!

Cut barrel....tolerable for a shooter. Nice gunsmithing job...check Oh yeah, they don't make revolvers like these anymore....double check!

Bottom line is I'd be ecstatic if I could get this gun for $750, but even $850 is not too far fetched. Two years from now you'd be laughing.

BTW, I traded my like-new GP100 stainless 4.2 for a mint blued 27-3 6-incher (not P&R), so that is the basis for my appraisal. I may one day shoot my 27-3 if only to zero it and say that I have shot it, then it is going back in the safe.

686's/GP100s are churned out daily. How often does a 27-2 come along?

Im gonna have a look at it soon and may buy it.
 
As far as I concerned it looks like a very nice gun. It may or may not shoot well because of the cut barrel. The value of the gun has been hurt a lot as now it is only a modified gun. If you deceide to sell it down the road it might be a very hard sell to get your money or close to it back. Now if it was the orginal 8 3/8 inch barrel it would be worth very good money. In my books $850.00 is a real stretch. Just my .02 cent worth.
