Anyone use milsurps for hunting? In particular .303 British and 7.62x54r. I would like to get hunting eventually but I'm kinda at a loss as to what these would be ideally suited for!

I shot my first several deer with a 303 Ross M-10 and a deer and three bears with Mosin Nagants.

You could kill anything in North America with those two calibres.

Up until this year, I used a .303 to hunt deer/bear. Awesome cartrige, and still very popular.

.303 or 7.62x54 are great big game rounds ie: Deer, bear, moose, elk, sheep etc.

moose/elk/deer 338 WM savage
moose/elk/deer 30-06 model 70
geese/ducks 870 wingmaster with rem chokes
ducks/pheasant/huns/chickens 870 or O/U Winchester
gophers 22LR 10/22 Ruger

whitetails, mulies, coyotes and pheasant - 6MM Remington on a tweaked 700
elk, moose, bear - 35Whelen also on a 700
sheep - 280Rem on a custom 700 Titanium, 260Rem 700 Titanium (stock)

I will likely start carrying only the 280 no matter what I am hunting.

That can't really be a serious question, can it?

I have a 98/30 that is full length. The dang thing is nearly 4' long!! I have NEVER shot a more accurate milsurp and for off hand shooting, the barrel is so heavy, it drives right down into the chest for a steady hold.

My first 3 deer were shot with a 1898 LEC .303 Br. Since then many have fallen as each year I take another out for a hunt. New rifles have come but none have gone. And each has counted for their share of game as long as I did my job, they did theirs.

Either will count for ANY game in North America. Despite what the "experts" say. If you want to shoot them from canyon wall to canyon wall 600-1000yds away, then, no, they won't work, but they work well within 200-300yds. Use them, you won't regret it.

Whitetail -- Ruger Hawkeye .243
Varm. -- Mossberg .22LR
Turkey, Rabbits -- Winchester M1200 12g

Next up!.... muzzleloader of some kind

to answer the original posters question... that's a reeeeeely long list, anything more specific?
I have a rifle dedicated to long range antelope hunting (Sako finnbear 25-06) a shotgun specific to fly in trips during which I may hunt grouse ( Ithaca M37 english ultralight 20 ga) a rifle for shooting beavers (Anschutz .22 mag) a rifle for elk 1/2 hr. before dawn in the feeding fields ( Sako AV classic re-barreled to .35 Whelen wearing a Zeiss 3-9x50mm scope) A gun for hunting anything on a day that I want to wander around our bush camp hunting nothing & everything (Krieghoff Trumpf drilling in 16 ga x 7x57 with .22mag insert barrel and wearing a 3-9 Kahles scope) a rifle for stalking a big critter in the bush ( Sako carbine 30-06) a rifle for calling coyotes ( Sako Vixen .222) a rifle for stalking whitetails ( Brno 22f 7x57) a shotgun for pheasants over pointing dogs (AyA #1 sidelock double 12 ga, 28" IC/IM) a shotgun for ducks over decoys ( 12 ga Win. Model 12 VR 28" with interchangeable choke tubes) a rifle for Snowshoe Hare in winter ( Win 9422 w/ Williams aperture sight) a Flintlock .50 for traditional early season deer hunts, a 16 ga. O/U for most pointing dog hunting and training duties, and the list goes on and on and on.....

I use a 30/30 Marlin RC for all Big game including bear, caribou, moose, elk, deer,...

I use the same gun for coyotes, jackrabbits, whatever...

That said I have used many rifles, and now and then use something different.

Sako Battue 7mm-08,..(this years bear)
45/70, 450 Marlin, .35 Remington. 223 wssm, 220 swift,.8mm Rem mag,
CZ 55o Kev and Lam in 22 250, ...

For small game i use a .22 Marlin Golden Mountie, SxS 16 gauge,..

For Waterfowl it used to always be my Beretta... but as of late it has been multiple shotguns,..mainly semi autos

If I had my .22, my 30-30 and my Beretta I would satisfied 99% of the time for most of my hunting

Moose - .338 RUM Model 700 LSS
Elk - as above
Deer - where do you start with this one? My favorite is my CZ858, second would be my BLR in .243, then 7600 in .243 and my stainless 7600 in .30-06 as backup.
Coyotes - Ruger 580 series stainless synthetic .223.
Prairie Chickens, etc. - Remmy 870 if I am lazy, .22 Cooey if I feel nostalgic.
Targets - 1911 - nuf said
