What do you hunt with your .25-06?

My son has a Ruger MKII in 25-06 and it's taken antelope,Mule deer,WT deer, black bear and a bull elk last fall at 400yards.Broke a rib entering and another leaving .Will poke a moose with it when the opportunity presents itself.I load him 54gr of H-4831SC behind Hornady 120gr HP's in Win cases and Fed mag primers.Harold

I had a 25-284 for a bit, which is a ballistic twin of the 25-06. I never did kill a thing with it in the year I had it, but carried it a bit for both wolves and deer. My wolf load was a 85 grain Ballistic tip @ 3450 fps and the deer load was a 110 grain Nosler Accubond @ 3175 fps, both loads STUPID accurate. shouldnt of sold that one! :slap:

I had one up until 2 years ago (browning A bolt) and I shot 6 caribou over the course of 2 years with her. I think that I took more long shots with that gun than any other I have owned. She was just such a flat shooter that I felt completely confident. Oh yeah, I nailed a nice wolverine with her that I have in a natural pose mount. It was a great gun. I always used federal factory loads with 117 grain soft points. (not much selection of ammo way up here) I would definately feel confident using such a gun on deer and even elk at moderate distances. (with the heaviest bullets you can find)

Got a pic of your wolverine mount?I've always liked wolverines.Cool tough little b@stards.

Anything in S. Ontario ... or the Near North for that matter.

In factory loads, Winchester's 85 gr. Supreme Ballistic Silvertips are a wicked good Varmint load ( and you'll get that nice nickel plated brass to reload ! ) and Federal's 115gr. Nosler Partition's shoould be Katz a$$ for moose or bear. Either Winchester 110 Accubonds or Federal 100gr. Nosler Ballistic Tips
or Barnes TSX's should do quite nicely for deer.

I thought you despised us quarter-bore crowd, TB. Shouldn't have sold that one! lol

dont despise, I just prefer the 6.5s  I sold the 25-284 because my custom 260 was just finished, and it does everything the 25-284 did but with 8-10 grains less powder :dancingbanana:

My biological father has shot everything with his 25-06 from coyotes to his black bear last year. First gun he ever bought (at 16) and he is deadly with the thing. Although he has more than a few other pieces he still uses it every year.

Stop flaunting the custom 260!! :runaway: We know your guns are awesome, O Great One :D

I hunt/shoot much less than you so it's not that big of a deal I guess. But if my lever doesn't come in time next week, the 25-06 will get a chance at those darn blackies! :sniper:

25/06 - flat as hell
- used it on squirrel, gophers, paper, targets, coyotes, deer, black bear, grouse(bad choice) and red fox(another bad choice)
- a little hot for the foxes, and coyotes but thats probably my fault for loading the wrong bullets:slap:
- pretty damn good round, just wish my H&R was a little more accurate

Don't know how you have been making out loading up your 25-05 since you started this thread but here is my two cents worth.
I have a new Browning A-Bolt (great to handle). Had fairly good success with Federal SGK-BTSP 117 gr and shot off a box in conjunction with a box of Remington CoreLokt 120 gr. My rifle seemed to hate the CoreLokt120's but would go back to 1 inch groups whenever I went back to the Federal SGK's.
I'd be interested to hear how anyone else makes out with the CorLokt 120's.

Admittedly I had a cheapy-special Bushnell Dawn & Dusk 3x9x40 temporarily mounted on my rifle because I had to cash in pop bottles to make up the full price of the A-Bolt. I have now upgraded to a Leupold VX ll 3x9x40.
I am now about to try Federal 115 gr Nosler Partitions and Federal Speer Hot-cores in 117gr. However, so far I'm not turning my back on the SGK-BTSP's just yet.

I planned to use the 25-06 for deer and keep to my 30-06 for bigger stuff but I'm now commited to a caribou hunt and after some research intend to use the 25-06. I find elk hard to kill (and believe me I've killed lots) and would not have the confidence to use anything lighter than a 308 on them.

(On the spinoff thread: there is NOTHING like a Silverado 350 4x4!! Wish I could afford a NEW one!!)

I went looking for a 25-06 and came home with a Weatherby Vanguard in .257 Weatherby. :D

It shot really well, but I have since sold it and bought what started life as a Remington 700 Classic in 7 mag but now wears a medium heavy barrel in .257 WM. It shoots beautifully! This rifle has a 3-9 x Leupold scope on it.
