I just phoned up all the local tire shops in town asking for their prices of wheel weight, the lowest was $15/5 gallon pale. is this a normal price or are they asking too much? The highest was $30 by the way.

$15 for 5 gallons is very reasonable, and so is $30. There are a lot of weights in a pail. Take an empty pail, or two with you, to split the weights up, so you can move them, and to leave one for the shop. Keep your foot in the door, so to speak.

Remember, there are guys like me who will take all the weights I can get. If nothing else, I share them with other shooters to keep them up and running.:p

$15.00 for a 5 gal pail is about right.I get most of my WW for free, just ask around at the tire shops. We have to change our tires twice a year,so lots of WW.

OK I was hoping for free to be honest, but I guess if $15/pale is a good price I cant argue. I might go pick up a pale or two tomorrow since I am gonna do some errands anyways. I just have to figure out a decent way to smelt it all efficiently as it would take uite a while using our little pot.

Well, $15 for that much lead is pretty decent......

on the other hand, you paying $15 to haul away their HEAVY garbage.... well....i guess it's all in how you look at it.:D

I usually sort the WW before melting them.
Clip ons .... good (melt all together seperate batch)
stick ons .... good usually pretty close to pure lead (melt all together seperate batch)
zinc (zn) ....Throw away no good
iron (fe) ....Throw away no good
If you are not sure about the ww use a pair of plyers, lead marks easy.

I hope you're not the guy who drives around Vancouver and collects all the lead from tire shops. I can't seem to find any in my part of town.

You guys should get all you can, while you can. Lead wheel weights are being phased out and replaced with another alloy, right now. I live in Ont and have been unable to get ANY WW from any shop at all. Up untill 2 years ago I was given about 10 lbs/month free from a shop. Now I've tried asking about and have been unable to get any and casting 400gr slugs uses up a lot quickly.

zero, zip, and SFA, at least so far, the tire shop I frequent parts with them for free, to secure my business. I've got I think five 20 liter pails full now. Some here, some at the cottage, always on the scrounge for more.

I've been hunting around. Two places I called wanted $50.00 for a 5 gallon pail. Yea...ok. You can keep them for that price.
Three places I called have some scrap company picking them up and wouldn't say anymore than that.
A scrap yard I called wants 50 cents a pound....about $50.00/5 gallon pail, give or take.
I've got a line on 3 pails for $25.00 each and I'm going to be plenty happy with that.

You guy who are getting them for $25.00 or less a pail....especially you #$#R#$%%ing guys :D who can still find them free, count your blessings. I can't see this lasting much longer since now most of the dealers have stopped using lead weights and North American cars are coming with steel/plastic/zinc/anything but lead. Secure your lifetime supply ASAP.

It's not the acid you have to worry about , they add some extra chemichals to the lead for sealed lead acid/long life batteries that acording to the Lyman cast(boolit) bullet handbook is nothing short of fatal to try and smelt . And once it is added to the aloy it remains there , They STRONGLY recomend leaving melting battery lead to the profetionals!!!!! And here again there is mutch info on the matter @ cast boolits , There for the reading . IMHO

A big pot, tiger torch, square shovel and a metal ice fishing scoop for skimming. The big pot was the hardest to think of since I already had the rest. Mine's a 3 gal stainless job made by a welding friend but I'm thinking that cutting the top off a 20 pound propane tank might be an easy way to go.

i get mine for free there are definetly becoming more and more steel/alum/zinc weights in the mix tho last full pail i got was nearly 50% waste

and i use an old cast iron wok it holds about half a pail of unsmelted weights
