What do you pay for wheel weights?

anyone take apart car type batteries for the lead ?

Bad bad badddddddddd. The stuff they add to them to keep them from freezing, and doing what they're supposed to do causes cancer in very low doses. Don't ask me to try and spell some of the names. I thumb my nose at toxic waste and chemicals all the time.
Yet, I have a healthy respect for, and stay away from heating the contents of car batteries for ANY reason.

All of mine were free. I quite likely have a lifetime supply at this point - most have been cast into puck sized blocks.

You guys are lucky. I scored so far my one and only 5 gallon bucket of lead last summer for free. I've been frequenting that tire shop for more but they either said none or check back in a month. Nada... I even offer $$$ to hold but they won't. :( That bucket I had weighed 150lbs and I was able to extract ~100lbs lead from it.

I think I only have at most 2.5k of 9mm left. I need more WW and no luck with my local tire store and I haven't check others except for Costco and the guy said not allowed to sell used WW.

Well I caved and went down and bought pale of weights for $15. Thier is a LOT od weights in their, and quite a few non-lead ones. Lots of iron and zinc, but their is still plenty of lead ones though. Dad says he got another pale a while ago sitting in his truck so i will go through them and see what I find. I have a feeling that in a year or so, we are not going to see any more lead weights any more. All of the stores I called said they have already switched to non-lead weights, and the only lead ones that had were from vehicles they did not do.

I am going to go to the scrap yard in a bit and see what they have, I figure they would have lots of pipe or other lead items for at least a decent price. I also heard that larger sailboats have lead in their keels for ballast, so I have a friend that is really into boats ot keep an eye out for an old junker.

Automotive batteries are bad mojo for casting !!

Our local scrap yard is paying .40 cents a pound right now for lead & zinc. Better get all you can get now, as was mentioned above, lead wheel weights will soon be a thing of the past.

How many bullets do you get out of a 5 gallon pail. I don't cast yet but think I should start collecting lead for when I do get started.

Last year, I gave away 250 lbs of mostly sorted lead WW, when I stopped casting.:bangHead: Cost me about 70 bucks after deducting what I used.

Now that I want to get back into it, nada. Somebody always beats me to them or scrap lead removal had been contracted out by the head office. Life can suck sometimes.

One pound = 7000 grains. If you cast 147gr 9mm you should get upto 47 boolits per pound. Guys have said they can get around 100 useable pounds so figure around 4700 per bucket.
