What do you thing about the magnaport

I believe that Mag-Na-Porting on any rifle is a positive step to reduce recoil.Make sure you get a real Mag-Na-Porting job though and not some fellow with a milling machine or drill press putting holes in your barrel. Mag-Na-Porting is done by the EDM machining process and cuts the gas vents without putting any burrs into the bore of the rifle.
The recoil reduction that is realized is in direct comparison to the volume of gas generated by the round. Therefore although the 308 Winchester will have less recoil than before porting: a magnum round which generates more gas and recoil will give a greater felt recoil reduction .
The nice thing about it is that you lose only 20-30 fps velocity but your rifle doesn't gain a 1 1/2 -2 inch extension with an expansion chamber on the end which you get with a muzzel brake.
Shooting a Mag-Na-Ported gun next to one that has a muzzel brake I don't think the average shooter could say for sure which was the more effective.they both help cut down recoil . Its largely a matter of personal taste.

I have had MagnaPorting done on two rifles and it is very effective at reducing muzzle rise. I would only trust Heliotex in Canada to do this.

As a way to reduce muzzle rise, magnaporting is not bad. However, for recoil control, there are much better choices. For the money, I would go with another form of brake.

Best bang for the buck right now is the Micalek AR 15 brake. Very effective at recoil control. wider then the Hollands and 1/2 the price.

Years ago I sent guns to be ported in Canada-Don't do it.Send them to the US.I still have one barrel that is badly scratched on the top of the lands for about 1".Nuff Said!

Joe Undikes does excellent work with Magnaporting firearms. The Magnaporting process is performed by EDM(electrical discharge machining) and cannot scratch anything, if there was a scratch it was not made by the porting process.
On a side note some muzzlebreaks are more effective than Magnaport but none are as esthetically pleasing and the porting does not add any length to the gun compared to some of the brakes that can add over 3" to the length of a rifle, this is worse than giving up a little felt recoil, IMO.

I have had many done by Joe Undikes here in Canada. He did an excellent job on all of them. That being said I don't know if he still does it.

The thing I don't like about Magna-Porting is when you go to clean the barrel - cleaning residue gets pushed into the ports and slowly leaks back into the bore. If you shoot it with this residue in the bore, the rifling is damaged and it does not take long for accuraccy to start to drop.

On close inspection of ported barrels that have been used, often you can see damage inside the bore close to the ports.

I would never Magn-Port any of my rifles again. If I need recoil reduction I will add a brake. Brakes are more effective at reducing recoil than Magna-Porting is anyway. Magna-Porting does look good though.

The problem was that the lands were scratched by not cleaning properly between individual cuts.I discussed this with Kelly at the time and he said that this was an ongoing problem with this operation in Canada. The next job went to the US and was perfect. This was many years ago and I hope the situation has changed but I would be very leary of work done by other than the US operation untill shown different .I sold another new gun he damaged at this time to get rid of it at no profit and felt lucky so this was not just a one time deal. The history of Magna Port in Canada did not interest me any more at that time but I will state that what I say might not apply to the current operation .

I have a Magna-Ported 340 Weatherby Mag, and I love it. I would never consider a muzzle brake (they are really ugly, and make your rifle another 2 inches longer - starting with a 26" tube, adding another 2" is 2 too much).

It's amazing how well it keeps the muzzle down. Even pushing a 225 gr Barnes Triple-X at 3150 fps, it's much nicer to shoot than my un-Magna-Ported 300 Mag. I'd do it again on a heavy kicker. I'm not sure how beneficial it would be on a .308, though.

Where can you get good magnaporting in Canada? I contacted Magnaport USA and they told me they no longer ship firearms to Canada because of new USA regulations requiring export licenses for any firearm part exceeding $100 in value!
