Okay I know that I still have some more milling to do but...
What do you think?
Clips into & replaces the rear leaf sight and will bolt into the rear of the reciever were it meets the stock.

Milled out the center and installed an AR 15 rear sight to line up with the front post. (You can barelly make it out because of my cell phone camera :redface:)

Still have to make a releaf cut so that the spent shell's don't jam up the rifle and I am not going to leave it painted black but maybe anodize it.

What can I say I have been sick for the last 5 days and I am really bord.
 
Need a product tester? :) I would be all over that. Don't know if Rauch will get his out this decade and don't think my plan B of using two NEA cantilever mounts end to end will turn out well either. My only concern would be having the piece that bolts onto the rear of the receiver not be permanently affuxed to the top rail. It's nice for maintenance to be able to pull off the dust cover for maintenance. I would think a shim riser off of the rear similar to how the shotgun fastfire mounts work would be perfect.
 
hehe thats 8 for good idea and 0 for bad idea. Im on my phone right now and cant see, is the rail easily removable for cleaning? that would be a fantastic setup if it is and if it holds zero. great work Satain, it looks so clean and fitting of the rifle
 
I am liking the idea of a flat top 858. My only concern would be the empties getting deflected back into the chamber. Perhaps the relief cuts will do the trick. Please keep us posted. This would be a good platform for all the optics we wished we could mount.

Fun project to tweak... It'll keep you busy. There's a key component that'll make it REAL easy.. took me ages to figure out; slapped myself for not getting sooner.

I am actually not a big fan of them. I like the looks of them when they have the wood stocks. Once they have all of the add ons, then have that SKS Bubba look to it IMHO.
 
It looks good. It needs two things to work.

1) Needs to hold zero while shooting and return to zero after "unhinging" to clean.
2) Bottom needs to be shaped properly to deflect empties.

Does the front sight have enough elevation to allow to zero the rifle? The rear sight looks a little higher than factory.

Also, you will need a set screw or some other device to hold the pin into the rear sight pin hole. With this done will it still rotate upwards?

I like your design as it's not as bulky as some I've seen and incorporating a rear sight is genius.

Great job... how easy will it be to dismount for cleaning, do you think the empties will come out freely ?

Currentley 1 out of 5 spent cassing's get jammed. So there is a lot of tweeking to do. Also there needs to be a defelctor shield intergrated to this rail to cure this issue but the angle is currently the 1 givinig me grief.
As for the rear peep sight, it only works for 25 meter & 200 meter mark. As the rail replaces the rear leaf sight and uses it as a pivot point and it is currently bolted to the stock so return to zero is an non-issue. As the 2 screw whole's are machined to go back into the same whole's so there for it's an non-issue. Plus the stock mounting bracket does not move once installed.
As for actually making this would actualy require a company to produce not a part time gun nutter like myself to do. Maybe after viewing the poll resualts an acutally manufacture or machinist would see the interest and make one of these.
 
Did you machine it from scratch yourself, as opposed to modifying an existing rail? If so, nice work.

How wil it come off to remove the action cover?

Ya I did from a soild piece of Alumiun @ my uncle's shop. If you look closley you can still see the machine marks on it. Currently has 2 set screw's in the rear of the rail that locks it into the rear stock mount. Although after much debate and some insight from a few member's on this board I am now thinking about wielding it directly to the rear cover.
What do you guy's think about this?

Not a good idea IMO. My top cover is fairly tight but I can wobble it with my fingers. It's not stable enough in my opinion. With a rail this long people will be scoping their rifles, not just using red dots. You want a rock solid platform, not just a fairly stable one. Your first idea is better. Unless you attach it to the top cover and lock it to the rear stock mount.
