what do you use for grouse partridge and why?

SKB O/U Model 500 in 20 gauge and choked IC/Mod.
Is really not a budget O/U, (discontinued) although shotgun prices vary with condition from bargain basement to Rizzini, etc.

Much like DiabeticKripple I mostly use 7/8 cheap target loads in 7.5. I save the Prairie Storm Number 6 for spooky sharptails in the open & grassy fields.

Zero complaints here.

OP - With the exception of the Winchester (well over 1000$) you are at the economy end of the scale. I prefer a single trigger, which makes the gun more complex/expensive. I would chose the Baikal - I've owned several, and they are reliable, with no plastic or pot metal.

I hunt ruffed grouse with a setter so they are flying. The guns I use most often are a 16 gauge Heym SxS 6 1/2 pound with 28" barrels choked open and open (lol) and a 12 gauge single barrel J & W Tolley 5 pound game gun, also with a very open choke. Both guns I typically shoot loads of 1 ounce or less of 7, 7.5 or 8, depending on what is handy when I'm heading out.

I currently used a 28ga but used to use a sxs 20ga. It works very well for upland bird. Only went with the 28 for its unique factor, but I have really grown attached to 28ga now.

Most of these birds were shot with a Tikka 412s with 28 gauge tubes in it using skeet loads of 3/4oz of 9's
Many of the shots were in the trees or high weeds.
My birds are always shot flying because I hunt over dogs for the most part
Cat

This
pair was shot with a FAIR 28 gauge using 7/8 oz of 7 1/2's

How do you get them to pose like that for you Cat??
Nice day out in the field Sir!

I mainly use my savage Milano in 410,my Winchester 9410 and my springfield m6 scout in 22/410

I was the only hunter get anything this year deer/moose hunt. I shot 1 (one) grouse base of neck with my SKS at ~20ft. Biggest game of the week!

A 22 is a lot of fun. Also less chance of meat damage. I also use an over under 12ga.
I made the mistake of using my Ruger SR-22 for grouse this year. Fish and game came up to me with weapons drawn because they thought I was hunting with an AR-15. I'll be getting one of those nice magpul stocks for my 10/22 now.

20ga over under is nice. Mossberg makes a Silver reserve II that is worth looking at. Also if you can find a Canuck dealer, they make an over under too.

Can't wait until they see me with either the GSG STG44 or 15 out there.

I use a 20g Ricol O/U that I bought from Corwin Arms, preferring #6 shot or #4 shot, though I have used #7 target loads. I hike a lot on my hunts, don't use dogs, sometimes use quads, and the size of this shotgun is perfect for being mobile. The fibre optic sights are great as well. One of my hunting partners liked mine som much the last few years, I bought him one and it has now replaced his .22 permanently.
